8 // COASTWEEKEND.COM In ‘Henry’s Hair,’ life changes forever MANZANITA — The doc- umentary short “Henry’s Hair” will screen 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 18, at Hoffman Center For The Arts. Doors open at 7 p.m. “Henry’s Hair” is a 25-minute film that follows Henry McCrea for one calendar year beginning with his mother’s funeral and ending at an assembly at his high school. You will be present for a number of life-altering moments as we watch a young man transi- tion from the innocence of childhood to the complexity of young adulthood. “Henry’s Hair” provides a glimpse into the life experience of a young man and his struggle to adjust to being a motherless child. Leaving his mother’s funeral, Henry announces to his dad that he wants to find some way to fight cancer. A short while later he reveals to his father that he will grow his hair out as long as he can and donate his hair to Locks of Love in honor in his mom. “Henry’s Hair” takes place at the end of 2007 through the year 2009. The story culminates as Henry completes his freshman year at an assembly where Locks of Love shaves his head and accepts his dona- tion. At the end of the film, we meet Henry again, this time in 2017. He is now 23 years old. In June 2017, Henry learns that his father has been diagnosed with a terminal disease and given very little time left to live. Henry is now a full-time college student, but he drops out of school in order to care for his ailing father. Henry’s decision allows his father to come home from the hospital rather than get transferred to an adult foster care facility. We talk to Henry about the intervening years since his mom’s death and the pending death of his father.
