Tiffiny Mitchell, a progressive lifted by union and conservation groups, scored an upset victory Tuesday in the Democratic primary for state House. Mitchell, a state child welfare worker who moved to Oregon three years ago from Utah, and John Orr, an attorney, were both seen as underdogs next to Tim Josi, a Tillamook County commis- sioner and former state representative with more name recognition and the backing of industry and state legislators. Wev — a land use consultant — and Roscoe — a former restaurateur — will compete in the first commission runoff in a decade after neither reached 50 percent of the vote in District 3. Doug Thompson — a property manager — finished third. New hot dog cart opens outside City Hall Inspired by East Coast carts By EDWARD STRATTON The Daily Astorian After retiring as a manager of KOA, Dale Brechlin started his first project: Building a food cart. Brechlin recently opened Boomer’s All-American Cui- sine on Duane Street across from Astoria City Hall. He focuses on hot dogs — in corn, on buns and sometimes in one of the casseroles he makes daily. He also offers desserts and free coffee. “I wanted something sim- ple,” he said, adding he was inspired by the hot dog carts he used to frequent on the East Coast. Brechlin, an East Coast native, had worked for a credit card company before joining national campground chain KOA. He managed sites at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, and Mount Rushmore before moving to the North Coast in 2011 to take over management of the KOA near Fort Stevens State Park. He hopes to cook crabs during the Astoria Sunday Market, establish a pop-up tent to serve food at other events and possibly go brick-and- mortar one day. Brechlin is the first tenant of Michael Bruhn, a Brim Avi- ation helicopter mechanic who recently acquired the down- town property in a foreclosure auction. Bruhn has been planning artist studios in the former Flourine & Co. beauty store, along with food carts and other vendors in the parking lot out- side. The lot had previously held up to four food carts that left when the property was in flux.
