LOCAL EVENTS. Hkbpbkians Victorious. An Ira. mense throng witnessed the oratorical content at FbHb City last Friday even ing. Expressive recitations were de livered by Mrs. Geo. Kinney of Falls City and Miss Orace Wliitlock n(0 re gon City. The itirla' churns and the Hesperian mule qiiartetto captured the audience with their carofully prepared and well rendered selections. ' They were warmly encored. Mr. Walker of Falls City sitng a c mical song of his own composition and was recalled three or four times. The subject of discus sion, "Resolved, That war has done more harm and proved a greater curse to mankind than intemperance," was ably discussed by the opposing so cieties. The Hesperian Invincible legion was represented by her best speakers, Fred Meinille, H. Brownell , , Ohas. Babcock and E. Secore and the boys were sharp and convincing in their arguments and left a good impression upon that In rue audience. The Falls City defended the ueg stive and had the very flower of her orato'a to discus the question; ttnse were Messrs. J. Ruy, Brady, Beach and OIen. The judges after few minutes of deliberation render ed a unanimous verdict f r the affirma tive. The judges were Miss Finley, Mr. Scout o( Falls City and Willis John son of Clackamas. Outside of the Chau tauqua assembly it was the largest liter ary gathering ever axsembled In the county. All declared, to have had a delightful time and to have enjoyed the trip immensely. Onk. Thob. H. Tongue tVeinhard's hall was packed on Wednesday evening to lia-en to the political talk of Thos. II Tongue of Hillsbnro, candidate lor con gress on republican ticket. Mr. Tongue is the best campaign speaker in the state and a most estimable gentleman He is ''loaded" on all political questions and is more than a match for opponents on (he platform, lie being well versed in the history of tariff and money. He believes in pound money. . Bad "Soda Water." Attorney Jo seph Rice of this city, while in Portland on Wednesday, attempted to get into an elevator in the Dekum building, but by mistake opened a basement door and fell down the stona steps, a distance of several feet, his head striking the wall. He was attended by City Physician Wheeler who found no serious injuries. Probate Court. C. B. Seventy Seventh Anniversary. The 77th anniverjary of Odd Fellow ship was celebrated at the Willamette hall on Mondav evening. The Odd Fellows, Rebekahs and the invited friends filled the hall. Eli Deck assaulted with a knife Alonz o McLane on last Fridav afternoon at Ely vilte on their way home from this city. McLane is but a boy and has been living with the Decks at Molalla. Deck was drunk. The boy, who i strictly sober, was badly cut on arm, severing two arteries,' besides cuts on hand. Deck was indicted by grand jury and is in jail. Susan B. Anthony of Rochester, Rev. Anna Shaw of Philadelphia, Dr. Calos Marlyn of Chicago, Frank Lincoln of New York, Alice Hamill-Handcock of Chicago, Selah Brown of Los Angeles, Mortimer Whitehead of New Jersey, Ella Higginson of New Whatcom and many other renowned personages will speak at the Chautauqua assembly this year. There will be special evangelistic meetings held in the Baptist church be gining Wednesday evening, May 6th, conducted by the Calitornia evangelists, Palmer and Turner. These men come with a good reputation as successful workers in California and Oregon, where they have already labored. All who are interested in such meetings are Invited to come and help make them a success. No one who cares for music in any form should miss the concert to be givea on next Saturday, May 2d, in Shively's opera house. The Epping Glee Club Concert Company which will be here for the Aral time, comprise, besides t n members of the glee club proper, a number of prominent artists whose ability guarantees an excellent all-round performance. Weise, who has been at St. Vincent's hospital in Portland for some time, is much improved and will return home In a week or so. .Mrs. Clark, of Portland, a well-known missionary, will be here this week to assist in tbe missionary meetings now being held in this city. Adolph Winterer, while working out side jail on woodpile, gave the sheriff the slip last Friday morning, but was recaptured before he had gone far. Treasurer M. L. Moore on Monday remitted balance of Clackamas county's state taxes to stLte treasurer. The 1895 state levy on this count amounts to nearly 123,000 W. J. Stratton, wife and child arrived on Saturday from New York state. Mr, Stratton will be associated with his father, I. J. Stratton, in the Blue Front grocery on the hill . At a meeting of the Portland wheel men on Wednesday the question of im proving the road between Oregon City and the "white house" was discussed and some action taken. An illustrated lecture on the "Life of Jesus Christ," from His birth to His death, resurrection and ascention, will be given by Rey. George Newton of Portland, in' the old M. E. church to-night (Thursday). License to wed granted on 23d to Gertie Bock and J. J. Miller; on 29th to Bessie D. Midlam and W. H. Mar shall and to Mrs. Carrie L. Robb and Justine Pease. Nine marriage license granted during April. Married, on Wednesday, April 29th, at the home of the bride's father, Enoch W. Midlam, by Rev. 8. W. Stryker of M. E. church, Miss Bessie Midlam and W. H. Marshall. After the ceremony an elegant wedding dinner was served.
