Uo.tky, "of t'oxey Army" fame, will slump Oregon lor the popu lists. The central committee refused to tlx dales for him ho he is coming on his own account. Many of the democrats who went over to the populists two years ago are returi ing to their allegiance, having become disgusted with the way in which tilings are worked in the parly of purity and reform. Jacksonville Times- Tun vole of Oregon in 18H4 for governor was divided as follows: Total vote....! 87,30,") Lord, republican. 41,034 Pierce, populist.. 2(1,033 (ialloway, democrat 17,598 Vote for congressional candidates stood : Republican 21,071 Democratic 10.29J Populist... 14,017 Prohibition '. 1,080 Total 47.033 Tim local elections in New York Btate, like those of the Central states, show that the democratic party js still very much alive. Thero are' gains almost everywhere. In Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin the democrats have cut down the republican majorities largely, and in several instances carried towns and cities that have for two years past gone republican. These results, go far as they have a political bearing, no doubt signify the pup ilar disgiiht ami disap pointment at this do-nothing, buncombe congress, and the public apprehension at the revival of Mcitiulcyistn. They justify the belief that thero is ground for the reviving hopo among democrats. To the President of Young Men's Re publican League of Oregon City : I will answer the address made by Hon. Thos. Tongue last nlulit, at "hively's opera bouse on Wednesday "venlng, May 6th, at 7 .30. Mr. Tongue refused us the privilege of the floor for in minutes to state our position. We will grant any antl free coinage man you may select, 30 minutes at the close of Hi r opening address and confine our aelves to rebuttal and summary argu ment in following him. You denounce populists as visionary, dishonest and ignorant. Dare you listen to a discus ion of an important national issue be fore an intelligent audience? ' Whether you meet us or not, the meet ing will be held. Respectfully, April 30. Chas. A. Fitch, AN OPEN LETTER. Oswego, Or., April 29. Editor Courier: There seems to be an impression in some quarters that I am in favor of the dismemberment of Clackamas county, and that, if elected to the legislature, I would ue likely to favor giving to Multnomah county a portion of the territory that now belongs to Clackamas. I am sure that this belief (if anybody really does believe it) Is bassed entirely on my action when I was in the legis lature in 1880, and not upon recent actions or expressions of mine. It is true that I did favor the annexa tion to Multnomah county of a small section of Clackamas on the west side of the river, in which Oswego Is situat ed. But the conditions then prevailing (io not exist today and consequently, the reasons for such action then do not exist today. In 1880 practically all the people in the territory proposed to be annexed to Multnomah were in favor of the move, and thy signed long and strong petitions for such action and sent them to me and to others members of the legislature. The section wanting annexation had all its commercial interests in Multnomah. Portland was the sole market, to which we had a good wagon road and a rail road. There was no road between Os wego and Oregon City without going nine miles out of the way over the hills to the westward. The only means of crossing the Willamette river was an inconvenient ferry. In tliii situation Oswego was practically cut off from communication and sympathy with Clackamas county, being leminded of its Clackamas connections only by the taxgatherer; and there were strong tiss uniting our interest with those ,f Mult nomah. loony v.e nave a good direct wagon road to Oregon City and a suspension bridge, which we helped to pay for, on which to cross the Willamette river to the county seat. Our interests in Mult nomah are relatively less than they were in 1880, while our ties to Clacka mas are a great dual stronger than they then were.' So the arguments that then applied to the separation from Clacka mas county are no longer good and the people are not now in favor of the ac tion they worked for then. I am one of the people and am gla I to recognize the changed conditions thai bind us to Clackamas; and I am certainly not now in favor of the dismemberment of this cotiniv. ' George W. Pkosser. While I was pastor of the Baptist Church at Rives Junction she was brought down with Pneumonia succeed ing La Grippe. Terrible paroxysms of coughing would last hours with little interruption and it seemed as if she could not survive them. A friend re commended Dr. King's New Discovery; it wa quick in its work and highly ratisfactory in results." Trial bottles free at Charman A Co'a Drug Store. Regular size 50c. and $1.00. The (Vttmi. THERE IS a'dIFFERENCE. It is now universally admitted that life Insurance in a reliable company is as much a necessity to the respectable business man as the clothing he wears and the food he consumes. The rates In all life companies are the same for the same kind of a policy. The results, however, are very different.' The Equitable Life, for instance, is always the first company to pay when a death occurs.. Notonlyisltlhefirstcompany to pay, but it entirely relieves thi claimant from the trnhl J . claimant from the trouble and expense of making up a death proof. In the event of a policy maturing during person's me lime, the results are very much better in the Equitable than in any other company, by reason of its more economical management. Whilst the protection is much stronger owing to the fact that the Equitable Life ha the largest surplus of any company in existence. L.
