Notice is hereby given Hint, wlicrens the St. Johns Gns I,iglit & I lent Company arc about to begin laying their mains through the streets of St. Johns, the residents desiring to secure same will please leave application for the use of Gas at the St. Johns Review. Applications will be accepted by this office, and by making such an application at once, it will insure our going with mains in your street. This company will begin laying mains to connect consumers only in streets where people arc ready to receive the same. There is no obligation on your part by making application for the use of the gas. It will only give tis the necessary information of the streets that arc desir ing same, and upon such information such streets will be equip ped with gas mains first. The residents upon streets that arc making no applications will be kept to the last. If you have never used gas for cooking purposes, try it. You will use nothing else. The single tax would raise wages by opening up land so the people could employ themselves and there by relieve the labor market. The single tax would reduce rent by bringing more land into use for homes, and encourage building of houses by exempting them from taxation. The single tax would break up land monopoly and give the man who works with his hand a chance to have a home of his own. The single tax would give wealth to him who works, to him who makes wealth, instead of the land lord who takes all the wealth that labor makes. The men who labor with their hands have made all the land values of Portland and everything else worth having, and what have they to show for all their labor? Suppose all the men who own no land were to leave Portland, what would the laud then be worth to its owners? Who will get the ben efits from the building of the great Swift packing plant? Will it not be the land owners who have now advanced the price of lots near the site too percent in expectation that many men who work with their hands will need this land to live on, and raise their children? The single tax would make this laud cheap to the man who wanted to make tise of it, and the sordid laud speculator could not well al- Eighteen Bills to Vote On Up to date we have been able to gather the following list of bills to be voted on in June. Hie farmer has not much laud when you measure it with the dollar, and, since the single tax proposes to tax laud according to its value, the most taxes would be levied 011 the laud iu the cities. Portland has more dollars)' worth of laud than all the rest of the state. This is about the way you find laud values: it is expected will be placed before the voters at the coming state elec tion. The proposed amendment reads as follows and any one can see at a glance that the aim is to remove state restrictions from the operations of saloons, theaters, race tracks, toolrooins, bowling alleys, milium nails and the sale of I liquors.
