An Article on Single Tax.
The single tax would raise wages
by opening up land so the people
could employ themselves and there
by relieve the labor market. The
single tax would reduce rent by
bringing more land into use for
homes, and encourage building of
houses by exempting them from
taxation. The single tax would
break up land monopoly and give
the man who works with his hand
a chance to have a home of his
own.
The single tax would give wealth
to him who works, to him who
makes wealth, instead of the land
lord who takes all the wealth that
labor makes.
The men who labor with their
hands have made all the land values
of Portland and everything else
worth having, and what have they
to show for all their labor?
Suppose all the men who own no
land were to leave Portland, what
would the laud then be worth to
its owners? Who will get the ben

Swift packing plant? Will it not
be the land owners who have now
advanced the price of lots near the
site too percent in expectation that
many men who work with their
hands will need this land to live on,
and raise their children?
The single tax would make this
laud cheap to the man who wanted
to make tise of it, and the sordid
laud speculator could not well al-

Keep Bright and You
WILL KEEP BUSY
Klcctric Unlit is the uingucl that draws trade. The
bright store is the "hypnotic eye" of business. People enn
no more resist the attraction of 11 brilliant, Electrically lighted
store than they can icsist the chit ion call of a brass bund.
Is your coiuetitor with the Klcctilcnlly illuminated show
windows, bright interior and sparkling KtcctiicSigu getting
1111 advantage over you? The moth never llutters mound the
tinlighted candle! Up-to-date Mores nowadays consider
shop-window lighting a necessity, whether they remain cn
after dark or not. Competition forces modem methods.
A show window brilliantly illuminated with Klcctric
light will make many a sale "the night before." Klcctric
light compels attention, makes e isy the examination of your
display, shows goods in detail and fabrics in their true colors.
And don't neglect the Klcctric Sign. It is soliciting
"tomorrow's" business every moment it is lighted burning
your name in the public mind. It is 11 solicitor that never
becomes weary never stops woik - costs little.
