Admiral Sampson had deter mined to bejin the Spanish-American war bv the bombardment of Ilnvnnn. and on April 4, 1898, Ev- ons, then captain, wrote a letter to the then editor of Harper's Weekly containing this tiarairraph: "I shall have tho honor of lead ing in the Iowa, and when wc open at about 800 yards, with Indiuna close astern, if thopo poor chap from the Maine don't giggle in their collins it will bo a wonder." This was the pregnant part of the letter. Sampson was forbidden from Washington to attack Havana, much to his disappointment and wrath. Interesting Facts About Its Incoming Prom the 8ea. Tho shad spends part of its lifo tt sea and part of it in fresh water. At the approach of tho spawning season it comes in from tho sea and seeks tho fresh water streams to spawn. At tho closo of this season it goes to sea again, thcro to remain ! until tho spawning season again ro turns. It is not known absolutely wheth I cr tho shad remains in deep water in tho ocean off tho approach of tho river whence it came or whether in winter it goes south into warmer waters; but it is commonly bcliovcd that when tho shad returns from whatever point at sea it may to fresh water it comes back to the river in which it was born; but a rcrccntago of tho shad do not re urn. It may bo a great percentage. It is certainly tho expectation whon shad fry aro placed in such a river as tho Hudson that tho young fish which survive and go to sea will return to tho Hudson. Hero the shores of Long Island and New , Jersey would servo as a great fun ' ncl to guido tho fish, if they needed guidance, to tho opening to tho bay and river. It is not supposed, however, that tho shad of a river basin, liko that of Chcsapeako bay, for example, re turn each group to its own pnrticu lar stream. That tho shad docs not alway seek its own river is plainly shown on tho Pacific coast, where tho shai' is not native, but was introduce! from the cast. There is, however, along tho Pacific coast a cold cur rent which tho shad docs jiot seek to pass. It is found in tho bays nnd estuaries nnd can bo caught tho year round, and tho nntural harrier that prevents its making an oiling has doubtless led to its gcnoral movo mont along tho coast.
