Doth grand stands were filled and so were the bleachers. The crowd was what the small boy would call "n bully good one." They were alt there to enjoy themselves and root for the under dog. The first game between the Trunkmakers and the Urewers was n listless affair full of errors up to the eighth inning. There was too much posing by the Trunkmakers' battery, and the crowd tired of it. The Brewers played better ball than their opponents, but could not pass them until the ninth inning, when they pulled themselves to gether and batted out two runs with no one out, winning me game by a score of 7 to 6: The second game between the Frakes nnd Urninard Cubs was n one-sided affair, the former having everything their own way. The 1 Cubs played ball like n lot of old women. At least that is the way I the game looked to many disinter ested ones. Their first baseman and shortstop had it habit of chas ing the bull like a pair of kittens, and when they secured it would stand nnd nrgue us to what should be done with it. Any team of school boys could have beaten them last Sunday. The Frakes begun by making four runs in the first inning. The supjwrt given Streit was miserable. He was taken out of the box in the second and Olney substituted. The nimble Frakes took kindly to his delivery and made three runs in the second. Hut the support given Olney was enough to discourage the stoutest heart. Twice, after he fielded the ball to throw to I first, the runner reached the base I because of the discussion going on between the first baseman and shortstop us to where they were playing. A double play in the sixth by the Cubs and one in the sixth and seventh by the Frakes were ap plauded by the crowd. The decisions of Umpire Davey were not as well received as they might have been, nnd for the first time on the ground there wus n bit of umpire baiting. It certainly did look as though the Frakes were being favored. The final score stood 8 to 5. WILL BEGIN DrcdAii'H for Pa. King Plant on the Columbia Slough. During the week extensive prep arations have been made to begin the work of dredging on Columbia idough where Swilt & Co. are to build their big packing plant. The immense dredge, which has lwen building at the ship yards in Port land, was towed to the slough yes terday. This dredge is of the suc tion type and is capable of handling over 3000 yards of dirt per day. It is supposed work will be continued day nud nighl, using several shifts of meu. The earth excavated from the channel will be utilized in filling up the low places adjoining the slough. In addition to the dredger twenty-five small barges were also built at tlie bhip-yards for use in the work of the dredge. These barges were towed to the mouth of the slough several days ago. A channel will be dredged that will accommodate all the river and sea-co'mr craft, aud the work will be pushed as rapidly appliances will allow. as modern DON'T! I ! ! The second of the games between Woodburn and St. Johns was played last Sunday on the grounds at the former plucc in the presence of a large and enthusiastic crowd. About fifty fans accompanied the local club. The game was one of the most exciting yet played in the Tri-City League. It required ten innings to decide the contest, nnd the muff of a fly by Outfielder Sloan gave the game to Woodburn iu the tenth. The locals put up as good 11 game as they could under the circum stances, and although playing sev eral new men, have no complaint to make about their treatment 011 or off the field. It was simply a case of Woodburn winning, and the home boys hope to be declared the victors the next time they meet. Concuuuon was almost invincible, . only one hit being made off of him, while Moore was touched up for , eight safe ones. '1 he home team ; stirted the run getting iu the first, ' aud Woodburn scored two iu their luiir. bt. Johns tied tlie score in the third and Woodburn made an other on their half of the fourth. St. Johns added another iu the fifth, and from that time on both teams worked like machines, putting their men out iu one, two, three order. There were numerous errors on both sides. The Woodburn band furnished music that enlivened the occasion. The score; ST. JOHNS. SOCIAL ETIQUETTE. man, it. 11. r.o, a. it. 0. Moore, c. . . . 2080 o P. Gains, 2I1. . . 1014 2 C. Promptness and Politeness lit Answer Ing Dinner Invitations. Tliero was once a ereat whoso nnmo I have forgotten, but Jj U is not important to this nnrra- tivc, who gave his son this bit of ! social advice: "Answer a dinner in- J! vilntion within twenty-four hours $ tl ...... !.. !i t ( 1 1' uiiur j on rucuivu 11. 11 yon ncccpi, let nothing short of tour death pre vent your going, anil if you die ar rango for n substitute in your will. Whatever you do, for heaven's sake bo prompt in the doing." Along tho panic linos was n note received by n certain Washington hostess from the valet of an attache of 0110 of tho legation?, "if. regrets that ho cannot come to Mrs. D.'s dinner, hut ho died last night." Now, a funeral in tho family is usually accepted as a very good rea son for not doing anything, but lit tlo short of 0110 can excuse a lack of punctuality in matters social. Whatever you are, ho prompt. A few years back it was consider' cd rather n nice tiling to come in fust n lit tlo late, (lirls going to balls spoke with prido of being among tho last arrivals. Novelists who would chronicle the doings of tho smart set got into the fashion of opening their choicest chapters with a vision of tho hostess and thojo of her gnosis who were un derbred or unfortunate enough lo have arrived on timo sitting iu de jected tdata awaiting tho honored guest of tho evening, who always tnntlo it 11 point to appear just fif teen minutes after the hour set in the card of invitation, but "wo havo changed all thnt." Punctuality, the politeness of kings, is onco more to the fore If you want to bo popular with U.oso who entertain, answer your infla tions as soon as you receive tliom. Personally I think a telephone invi tation a twentieth century species of inquisition. Mow can you think of lilting excuses for not going or properly enthusiastic reasons for going when yon nro confronted with a gaping bit of motal in the rhapo of a transmitter? But tho tele phono has had its use as well i'h its nbuso iu that it has obliged tho oth erwise tardy to rnuio up to time. Tho nioro informal and personal tho invitation tho prompter should tho answer be. If you are going to he merely an ntom in 11 vast awni blagc, then you may ho pard ned for lolling your reply to your bid ding dally, but if you nro to be one of n chosen few such hesitant y is ono of tho blunder that nro uorso than crime.
