We want to thank the Curry Bros, of the La Grande Observer for favors and courtesies extended. It was mainly through their efforts that so uiiiuy of the delegates were privileged to sec the Grand Ronde valley with its diversified industries fruit farms, saw mills, Migar leet factory; its artesian well 850 feet deep and flowing all the time. La Grande is all that is claimed for it in story or in song. The red man, I imagine, as he rode his cayuse across the valley, or as he jerked the fish for his winter store thought it a veritable paradise. We met some old time friends who were in business there. Mr. Watts of Watts & Matthews, AN bina, is there with a very fine drug store; Mr. Hitter, also of Albiua, is nicely located two doors from the Observer office. We also en joyed a very pleasant visit with Mrs. Ritter, who was formerly Miss Musgrove. She says: "This is a good place, but I get so home sick for dear old Portland." In closing I want to express thanks to ex-Mayor J, I), Stoddard and his estimable wife for their kindness during our stay with them, espec ially to the writer, who was so kindly taken care of, while indis posed. Gates of the iSvan gelical church was in attendance at the Commencement exercises of Dallas college the first three days of the week. Moses Tufts, Clarence Young, and O. L. Clniel have been in the mines of southern Oregon for some weeks. They are thirty-five miles from a postoflicc. Mrs. I). C. Rogers of Ilwaco was a guest at the home of J. II. Crook 011 Monday. Mrs. Oliver Graham of Hast Portland was also a guest of Mrs. Crook 011 that day. Couch & Co., the up-to-date mer chants, have just installed a first class electric coffee grinder. A most remarkable death record Ik that which has occurred in the family of Mrs. Frank Smith, at the old Nebraska home. There have Ik'CH three deaths in five weeks and four deaths within three mouths. The last one to die was Mrs. Smith's father, Peter Peterson at Plattsmouth, Neb. The Swift Co. have made prep arations for filling up Smith's lake and the dredging of the slough near the site of their immense pack ing nlaut. While theie he observed the man ner in which salmon is canned, He tells us the lish are taken from the boats and put through the canning oKintiou with such rapidity that it is necessary to leave u sniull own ing at the top of each can for the escape of the salmon's last breath. Something Strange. St. Johns people do not seem to be looking for money in denomina tions of 25c. When one of our advertisers offered a rebate on purchases of 1 or more for the return of their ml cut from this paper, not one per son responded to it, although the ad was very prominent uud the offer was made by n responsible firm. The reason for the offer was clearly stated and continued in two issues of the paper. The management of this pajx-r is interested in the upbuilding of the community, and is assured by the merchants of their continued ef forts to carry a stock as complete as the demands require. This can be done only by the trade calling for their requirements, and by responding to bona fide knowledge conveyed them by this paper in advertising.
