There is great need of such an organization provided that it can he made a good one Other cities have them there is no good nnd sufficient reason why St. Johns should have the push and pluck shown by other small com munities. Under the title of the "Commer cial Club" much was done for this city by it body of energetic men men who saw the possibilities of the locality. Under the manage incut of the Commercial Club in dtistries were secured and new res! dents gained. It is very likely that these same industries would not have found St. Johns had it not been for the ersistent effort of this club although it Is fair to say that some industries would have located here even if they had not arrived for many years. For some reason or other a con demnation of the Commercial Club took root, nourished and bore fruit. Just what those causes were it is hard to say but the effect was evident. The club went to pieces. Since then any effort to tevive u like organization under any other name has been almost iuiossihlc. Several efforts have been made only to tesult in disaster. Theie is frequently an assertion made that St. Johns is only a real estate man's graft. No .statement could be farther from the truth. What is now necessary tole done is to show the wot Id that such 11 title is not deserved. Yet one can but admit that had not the real estute men steped gallantly to the foie when some needed industry was sought or "pulled their wad" when there was need of cash the city would not be what it is today. Hut today the city is out of that class. It has droped its knee pants and has an air of young man hood, It oilers excellent oppor Untitles for the manufactures, the capitalist, the investor, the home seeker. St. Johns Is today the largest and most pioseious of any three-year-old on the coast: and there bids fair to Ik; no cessation of its opportunities and jMissibilitlrs There is need of 11 dun ot some sort or an organization if one prufers so to call it to get busy. I.et this club be fnimed at once uud with good olliceis theie will lc a tremendous appreciation iu all lines and iu every way. Very few people have any Idea of the number of meetings held by the city council during the past year. According to the charter there can be but two meetings held each mouth hut business pressure has been so great that it has been necessary to largely increase that number. During the past fiscal year there have lcen 0.1 meetings held iu eluding tegular, adjourned, social and "otherwise." Mayor King has been present at Ctx of these absent from but one. Councilman Liudquisl has the same record 63 times ptcscul ami once absent. The next best record is held by Councilman ihoiupson: present 61 times and absent but three times, Councilman I.eggett was present at 57 meetings ami has been absent seven times. Councilman Peterson comes next 011 the roll of honor: he had ten absent marks leiug present .s t times. Councilman llrice and I'M wards stand tietl on the record: each was present at 53 of the meetings and was absent an even dozen times Louuciimaii Mil ids was absent 25 er cent of the time: he lieing and absent the peanut ' fees to the city. When the voting places have I was over it was to the effect that tne recorder receive Si 000 a year and the usual fees. Mr. Raser moved that the salary of the city attorney be placed at $60 per mont. Mr. Hewitt thought $50 the right figure. The vote showed the council thought the old figure of -f Go ier month 11s proper coiniwusation for the legal department.
