SEPTEMBER 7, 2018, KEIZERTIMES, PAGE B3 Volcanoes go 1-2 with Emeralds, 0-2 vs. Hops By HERB SWETT Of the Keizertimes Tuesday, Aug. 29 Eugene 6, Volcanoes 5 Salem-Keizer couldn’t quite do it. After a three-run rally in the seventh inning that cut Eu- gene’s lead from four runs to one, the game was scoreless the rest of the way. The Volcanoes outhit the Emeralds 11-7. In the bottom of the sev- enth, Dalton Combs hit a two- out single and reached second base on a wild pitch by Ivan Medina. Robinson Medrano singled Combs home and went to second on a single by Nico Giarratano and third on a single by Kyle McPherson. Sean Barry took the mound and scored Medrano with a wild pitch. Diego Rincones walked, and another wild pitch got Giarratano home. Joey Bart was intentionally walked, but David Villar struck out. Bart hit the only home run of the game, a solo shot in the fourth. Cam Sanders was the win- ning pitcher in relief with a 1-2 record, and Eugenio Palma had his second save. Gregory Santos started for the Volcanoes and took the loss at 2-5. Thursday, Aug. 30 Volcanoes 15, Eugene 5 The 2,065 fans at Volcanoes stadium saw their team tear apart the Emeralds to even this fi nal home series of the season. Eugene scored the only fi rst-inning run of the game, but Salem-Keizer responded in the second with six runs. The rally included home runs by Joey Bart and David Villar -- No. 12 in each case, as well as a triple by Nick Hill and the only stolen base of the game, by Aaron Bond. Bond also hom- ered in the sixth. Trent Toplikar started on the mound for the Volcanoes and went four innings, the most he had pitched this season. Blake Rivera relieved him and gave up Eugene’s remaining runs in the sixth, so Miguel Figueroa, who pitched the last two in- nings without allowing a run, became the winning pitcher at 2-5. The loss went to the Emer- alds’ starter, Eury Ramos, for a KEIZERTIMES/Derek Wiley Robinson Medrano takes a cut at the plate. record of 2-5. Friday, Aug. 31 Eugene 7, Volcanoes 3 The series rubber game and fi nal home game of the season went to the visiting rivals. Eugene scored fi ve runs in the fourth inning and two in the fi fth, holding Salem-Keizer scoreless until the eighth. Aaron Bond’s 12th home run, with David Villar and Wander Franco on base, put the Volcanoes on the scoreboard. For the Emeralds, Levi Jor- dan had three hits and scored twice, and Jonathan Sierra drove in four runs. Faustino Carrera was the starting and winning pitcher for Eugene for a 5-2 record. Seth Corry started for the Volcanoes and was the losing pitcher at 1-2. Saturday, Sept. 1 Volcanoes 3, Hillsboro 1 The Volcanoes were unawed by publicity touting the Hops for having the best won-loss fi gures in the Minor Leagues, opening this road series with an extra-inning win. Matt Frisbee, the last of four Salem-Keizer relievers, used his slider effectively to get his fourth win against one loss. Hillsboro’s Josh Green took the loss for a 3-1 record. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the eighth in- ning, when the Hops scored their fi rst run. The Volcanoes answered with a run in the ninth. Dalton Combs and Ri- cardo Genoves were hit by pitches from Travis Moths. Jett Manning singled Combs home. In the 11th, Aaron Bond started on second base under the recently adopted extra- inning rule and went to third as Joey Bart grounded out. Combs singled Bonds home and reached second on an out- fi eld error. Nick Hill was hit by a pitch from Green, Jett Man- ning grounded into a force out, and a single by Kyle McPher- son scored Combs. Sunday, Sept. 2 Hillsboro 9, Volcanoes 7 Salem-Keizer was ahead 6-1 after four innings, but then Hillsboro took over, tying the score at 7 in the seventh and adding two unearned runs in the eighth. The Volcanoes outhit the Hops 13-11 but made two er- rors to none for their hosts. In the second, an error by sec- ond baseman Kyle McPherson moved Jake McCarthy to third base, and he soon scored. Mc- Carthy was involved again in the eighth, reaching fi rst when shortstop Jett Manning bobbled the ball and scoring on a triple by Geraldo Perdomo. The Volcanoes out-homered their hosts 5-1. Joey Bart hit his 13th in the fi rst with the bases empty, David Villar hit his 13th in the third with Bart on base, and Wander Franco led off the second with his fi fth. Aaron Bond hit his 13th in the fourth with Franco on and his 14th, a solo shot, in the sixth. Perdomo hit his third in the fi fth with the bases empty. Chester Pimentel, the Hops’ fi nal reliever, got the win for a 3-1 record.
