PAGE B2, KEIZERTIMES, AUGUST 17, 2018 Rincones stays hot in home loss to Canadians By HERB SWETT Of the Keizertimes A fi rst-inning line drive that sent the Volcanoes’ best starting pitcher to Salem Hospital was the fi rst in a se- ries of things that ended up with the Vancouver Canadi- ans winning 8-5 Saturday Following the injury to pitcher Gregory Santos were several innings of Vancouver line drives that fell for hits and in two cases cleared the fences and Salem-Keizer line drives that did not. Later in the game, the Vol- canoes hit the ball more ef- fectively but never caught up. With two out in the top of the fi rst inning, a line drive by Griffi n Conine hit Santos on the side of the head and went for an infi eld single. Santos fell to the ground, conscious but immobile for most of the 22-minute wait for an ambulance. After the ambulance ar- rived, he was able to stand but was placed on a stretcher. Ed Figueroa relieved San- tos, and Yorman Rodriguez hit a home run over the left fi eld fence. Figueroa retired the next two batters, but in the top of the second, after McGregory Contreras singled and Bran- don Polizzi walked, a passed ball by catcher Joey Bart moved both runners up. Otto Lopez walked to load the bases. Tanner Kirwer scored Contreras with a sacrifi ce fl y to left, with Polizzi taking third base. Otto Lopez came to bat, and a throwing error by Figueroa allowed Polizzi to score. Trevor Horn, a pitcher making his fi rst appearance for the Volcanoes, relieved Figueroa to start the fi fth in- ning. The next score came in the Volcano fi fth. Jett Man- ning walked, went to second when a pitch by Vancouver starter Jose Espada hit Diego Rincones, and reached third as Bart grounded into a force out. A wild pitch allowed Manning to score. In the Canadian sixth with no runners on base, Brett Wright homered over the left fi eld fence. With Troy Miller on the mound in the bottom of the sixth, Aaron Bond led off with a walk. Two outs followed, and Bond moved to second after Dalton Combs was hit by a pitch. Manning singled to left, ATHLETE of the Week presented by DIEGO RINCONES bringing Bond home. Vancouver added two runs in the seventh. Lopez bunted for an in- fi eld single, and Kirwer dou- bled to left center, scoring him. Kirwer stole third base and scored on a throwing er- ror by shortstop Manning. JJ Santa Cruz, back with the Volcanoes after a brief stay with Augusta of the South Atlantic League, took the mound and retired the side. The Volcanoes responded with three runs in their half of the seventh. Rincones doubled to cen- ter and came home as Bart singled to right. David Villar doubled to center, driving in Bart. Joey Pulido came in to pitch and struck out Bond but walked Robinson Medrano and hit Ricardo Genoves, loading the bases. Combs grounded into a force out, and Villar scored on the play. The last run of the game came in the Vancouver eighth. Polizzi hit an infi eld single, reached second as Lo- pez hit an infi eld single, went KEIZERTIMES/Derek Wiley Diego Rincones, outfi elder for the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, was 1-for-4 with a double against the Vancouver Canadians on Satur- day, Aug. 11. Rincones hit two home runs and drove in fi ve runs in Friday’s game.
