AUGUST 17, 2018, KEIZERTIMES, PAGE B3 Volcanoes drop three in extra innings Thursday, Aug. 9 Volcanoes 11, Vancouver 10 This was a wild one until the fi nal out. The Canadians scored once in the fi rst inning and twice in the second before the Volcanoes tied the score in the bottom of the second. Salem-Keizer out- hit Vancouver 14-9 and led most of the way, but it was al- ways close. Of the four home runs in the game, three came from Volcanoes. Aaron Bond hit his sixth, David Villar his 10th, and Diego Rincones his fi fth. Van- couver’s homer was McGrego- ry Contreras’s eighth. Solomon Bates, the second of fi ve Volcano relievers, was the winning pitcher at 4-0 despite allowing four runs, all earned, in his three innings. Jesus Tona had his ninth save despite fal- tering a bit. The loss went to Joey Murray for an 0-1 record. Friday, Aug. 10 Vancouver 10, Volcanoes 7 (10 innings) A ninth-inning Volcano rally was not enough to keep the visiting Canadians from eve- ning the series. Vancouver led for nearly the entire game, but Salem-Keizer scored three times in the ninth to bring on a 10th inning. Then the Canadians scored times and the Volcanoes only once. Vancouver outhit the Volca- noes 15-9, but Salem-Keizer hit all three home runs of the game. Diego Rincones hit his sixth in the third with Kyle McPherson on base and his seventh in the ninth with Robinson Medrano and Nico Giarratano on base. Aaron Bond hit his seventh in the fourth with the bases empty. Sterling Guzman had four hits and Yorman Rodriguez and Jesus Severino three each for Vancouver. Will McAffer was the win- ning pitcher with a 4-2 record and Matt Frisbee the loser at 2-1. Sunday, Aug. 12 Vancouver 6, Volcanoes 4 (10 innings) This extra-inning loss guar- anteed Vancouver a series win. The Volcanoes outhit the Canadians 12-4 but hurt them- selves with errors and wild pitches. Salem-Keizer pitch- ers issued six walks, Vancouver pitchers none. After the visiting Canadians scored a run in the fi rst in- ning, the Volcanoes answered with two in the second as Aaron Bond hit a home run with Wander Franco on base. The Volcanoes added a run in the fourth as Bond, who had singled, reached second on a wild pitch, and stolen third base, came home on a ground out. Vancouver tied the score in the fi fth inning, and each team added a run in the ninth. In the Canadian 10th, Bran- don Polizzi started on second base under the fairly new ex- tra-inning rule. He stole third, Tanner Kirwer walked, and Griffi n Conine was hit by a pitch. A sacrifi ce fl y by Yorman Rodriguez scored Polizzi, and Kirwer reached third on a wild pitch and scored on an outfi eld throwing error. Fitz Stadler was the winning pitcher with a 1-2 record, and Marcus Reyes got his second save. Sidney Duprey took the loss at 1-2. Monday, Aug. 13 Vancouver 3, Volcanoes 1 (10 innings) This third extra-inning game of the series with Vancouver ran Salem-Keizer’s losing streak to four. In an unusual pitching per- formance for the Volcanoes, Jake Wong, Alex DuBord, Trent Toplikar, and Matt Frisbee combined for no earned runs. All three runs came in the 10th inning and were charged to Toplikar but were unearned. The game was scoreless un- til the 10th. Griffi n Conine started the inning at second VOLCANOES BASEBALL This Week KEIZERTIMES/Derek Wiley Jake Wong started and pitched three scoreless innings on Monday, Aug. 13 against Vancouver. base and scored as an error by shortstop Nico Giarratano put Jesus Severino on fi rst. Severino advanced on a ground out and a single and scored on another single. Christopher Bec scored from third on defensive indif- ference. Giarratano started the bot- tom of the 10th on second, reached third on a single by Christopher Burks, and scored on a sacrifi ce fl y by Aaron Bond. Toplikar took the loss for a 1-2 record. Will McAffer was the winning pitcher at 5-2. Tuesday, Aug. 14 Boise 9, Volcanoes 5 The slump continued as the Volcanoes, who led 5-2 after 3-1/2 innings in this road series opener, found the score tied af- ter fi ve and allowed the Hawks four runs in the seventh. All fi ve Salem-Keizer runs came in the second. David Villar led off with his 11th home run. Wander Franco walked, Dalton Combs singled, Will Albertson singled Franco home, a triple by Kyle McPherson brought Combs and Albertson home, and Diego Rincones drove in McPherson with a single. Boise, which outhit the Vol- canoes 13-10, had one home run, by Cade Harris in the sixth with no one on base.
