A fi rst-inning line drive
that sent the Volcanoes’ best
starting pitcher to Salem
Hospital was the fi rst in a se-
ries of things that ended up
with the Vancouver Canadi-
ans winning 8-5 Saturday
Following the injury to
pitcher Gregory Santos were
several innings of Vancouver
line drives that fell for hits
and in two cases cleared the
fences and Salem-Keizer line
drives that did not.
Later in the game, the Vol-
canoes hit the ball more ef-
fectively but never caught up.
With two out in the top
of the fi rst inning, a line drive
by Griffi n Conine hit Santos
on the side of the head and
went for an infi eld single.
Santos fell to the ground,
conscious but immobile for
most of the 22-minute wait
for an ambulance.
After the ambulance ar-
rived, he was able to stand but
was placed on a stretcher.
Ed Figueroa relieved San-
tos, and Yorman Rodriguez
hit a home run over the left
fi eld fence.
Figueroa retired the next
two batters, but in the top of
the second, after McGregory
Contreras singled and Bran-
don Polizzi walked, a passed
ball by catcher Joey Bart
moved both runners up. Otto
Lopez walked to load the
bases.
Tanner Kirwer scored
Contreras with a sacrifi ce fl y
to left, with Polizzi taking
third base. Otto Lopez came
to bat, and a throwing error
by Figueroa allowed Polizzi
to score.
Trevor Horn, a pitcher
making his fi rst appearance
for the Volcanoes, relieved
Figueroa to start the fi fth in-
ning.
The next score came in
the Volcano fi fth. Jett Man-
ning walked, went to second
when a pitch by Vancouver
starter Jose Espada hit Diego
Rincones, and reached third
as Bart grounded into a force
out. A wild pitch allowed
Manning to score.
In the Canadian sixth with
no runners on base, Brett
Wright homered over the left
fi eld fence.
With Troy Miller on the
mound in the bottom of the
sixth, Aaron Bond led off
with a walk.
Two outs followed, and
Bond moved to second after
Dalton Combs was hit by a
pitch.
Manning singled to left,

Vancouver added two runs
in the seventh.
Lopez bunted for an in-
fi eld single, and Kirwer dou-
bled to left center, scoring
him. Kirwer stole third base
and scored on a throwing er-
ror by shortstop Manning.
JJ Santa Cruz, back with
the Volcanoes after a brief
stay with Augusta of the
South Atlantic League, took
the mound and retired the
side.
The Volcanoes responded
with three runs in their half
of the seventh.
Rincones doubled to cen-
ter and came home as Bart
singled to right.
David Villar doubled to
center, driving in Bart. Joey
Pulido came in to pitch and
struck out Bond but walked
Robinson Medrano and hit
Ricardo Genoves, loading
the bases. Combs grounded
into a force out, and Villar
scored on the play.
The last run of the game
came in the Vancouver
eighth. Polizzi hit an infi eld
single, reached second as Lo-
pez hit an infi eld single, went
