PAGE B2, KEIZERTIMES, JULY 13, 2018 Volcanoes win big on the fourth By HERB SWETT Of the Keizertimes The Volcanoes celebrated the Fourth of July at home with a 15-1 pounding of the Hillsboro Hops. It was the middle of three big events at Volcanoes Sta- dium before a crowd of 5,255. The fi rst event was an Inde- pendence Day program that honored people in the armed forces and veterans, with the emphasis on women. The last was the usual fi reworks display. Lopsided as the game was, it was a come-from-behind vic- tory, because the Hops scored their only run in the fi rst in- ning. Salem-Keizer responded with two runs in the fi rst, two in the third, four in the fourth, six in the fi fth, and one in the eighth. The star of the game was newcomer Joey Bart, who hit two home runs and caught effectively enough for Jake Wong, Solomon Bates, Miguel Figueroa, and Trent Toplikar to combine for a three-hitter. Pitching his fi rst Salem- Keizer game, Wong allowed the one Hillsboro run and was relieved after two innings in manager Hector Borg’s system of testing pitchers for their starting potential. Bates pitched the next two and got the win for a 2-0 record. Bates pitched four innings and Toplikar the ninth. Tra Holmes led off the game and was hit by a pitch from Wong. He stole second base and reached third as Bart’s throw went into center fi eld. Jorge Perez drove in Homes with a sacrifi ce bunt. In the Volcano fi rst, Hops starter Jackson Goddard walked Jose Layer and Kyle McPherson. Diego Rincones singled to left fi eld, scoring Layer. McPherson reached third base and Rincones sec- ond on left fi elder Perez’s throw. Bart hit into a fi elder’s choice but batted in McPher- son. Goddard left the game after the fi rst and became the losing pitcher at 0-1. Bryan Valdez relieved him. McPherson hit a one-out double in the third, and Bart hit his fi rst homer, clearing the left fi eld fence. Newcomer Aaron Bond hit a one-out infi eld single in the fourth and went to second as Valdez was called for a balk. Kevin Rivera drove Bond home with a double to right center. Layer then hit his fi rst homer of the season, clear- ing the left center fi eld wall. McPherson followed with a triple to right center and scored as Rincones singled to center. Ryan Ricci took the mound and retired the side. The fi rst Hillsboro hit of the game, a one-out single by McCarthy, came in the fi fth. In the Volcano fi fth, David Villar led off with a double to right center. Robinson Medrano and Wander Franco loaded the bases on throwing errors by third baseman Joey Rose. Rivera singled to right, driving in Villar. Layer scored Medrano with a single to center. McPherson then hit a grand slam over the left fi eld wall, his second home run of the season. Bart’s second home run, over the right fi eld fence in the eighth, was the fi nal run of the game. “They play well; they play hard,” Borg commented, re- ferring not only to the Fourth of July win but also to the les- sons his players learned from the series in Vancouver. Figueroa is one of the Volcano pitchers who have pitched well since getting clobbered in their fi rst games of the season. He said through a translator, teammate Sidney Duprey, that he did it largely by working on his fastball and his changeup. KEIZERTIMES/Derek Wiley Kyle MoPherson, shortstop for the Salem-Keizer Voloanoes, was 3-for-4 on the Focrth of Jcly with a docble, triple and grand slam in a 15-1 win over Hillsboro. BART, continued from Page B1 but you get hot and cold so you can’t ride the highs too high and just getting out here and having fun, being able to come play the game I love to play and kind of get away from all the craziness that’s been go- ing on the last couple of weeks and kind of get settled in and start playing.” Bart, after his junior sea- son at Georgia Tech in which he was named the Atlantic no doubt, but we’re all here in pro ball, starting from the bot- tom, so I’ve got to work my way back up.” Bart, who is living with a host family while playing for the Volcanoes this summer, plans to save the $7.03 million. “I’m not looking to do much with it to be honest with you,” he said. Bart hit a grand slam to right fi eld against Boise on Monday, July 9 and is hitting .304 with four home runs and 11 RBIs in his fi rst fi ve games. “I’m just glad to be back out here playing the game hard,” Bart said. “I believe if you play the game hard and prepare right, it will take care of you.” But Bart, a 21-year-old who has spent his entire life in the Atlanta area at Buford High School and then Geor- gia Tech, feels like he’s just get- ting into the swing of things here in the Pacifi c Northwest. “I’ve still got some work to do before I’m really locked in,” Bart said. “It will come with time and at-bats. I’m looking forward to that moment.” TIES UNKNOWN CLAIMING ANY RIGHT, TITLE, LIEN, OR INTEREST IN THE PROP- ERTY DESCRIBED IN THE COMPLAINT HEREIN, CITY OF JEFFERSON, OREGON DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES, Defendant(s).
