By DEREK WILEY Of the Keizertimes McNary Senior Federal went 5-0 to win the Grizzly Grand Slam in McMinnville on Sunday, July 1. The McNary Youth Base- ball 14U team, coached by Brian Aicher and Kelly Bach, defeated Pioneer Senior Fed- eral 14-7 to fi nish the tour- nament undefeated. McNary scored six runs in the third and fi ve in the fourth inning of the rout. Hayden Kaiser went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run, three RBIs and scored three runs. Bo Bielby, Eric Olsen, Gunner Smedema and Jake Paton each had two hits. Bielby pitched the fi rst four innings for McNary. Eban Meyer came in relief to pitch the middle two innings and Kaiser got the fi nal three outs to close the game. McNary’s closest game was a 4-3 victory over Sun- set. Tied 3-3 in the bottom of the fi fth, Zane Aicher doubled to lead off the in- ning and then stole third and home to score the winning run. ATHLETE of the Week presented by McNary Federal Olsen pitched the fi rst six innings to earn the win. Kai- ser then fi nished off Sunset, striking out two batters on just 11 pitches. McNary opened the tour- nament with a 9-5 win over Sherwood on Friday. Quinn Bach and Mehki China each had two hits. China’s bat stayed hot on Saturday. He went 3-for- 3 with a double and scored three runs as McNary defeat- ed North Marion 11-3. McNary also topped Mountainside 9-5 on Sunday. Aicher was 2-for-4 with two doubles. Bart provides fi reworks in debut By DEREK WILEY Of the Keizertimes If any of the more than 5,000 fans in attendance didn’t know Joey Bart’s name going into the Salem-Keizer Volca- noes Fourth of July game, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 Major League Baseball draft made sure they knew it after- wards. Bart, in just his second at- bat with the Volcanoes, hit a two-run home run to left fi eld. “I wasn’t really thinking that much, like I always do at the plate or most of the time,” Bart said. “It was a change up and I went down and got it and put a good swing on it and it got up out of here. Please see BART, Page B2 Holiday outswims Northview By DEREK WILEY Of the Keizertimes Holiday Swim Club won its second straight home meet, defeating Northview Terrace 304-198 on Thursday, July 5. Holiday opened the meet by winning seven of the nine medley relays. Northview took fi rst in the boys 13-14 and 15-18 medley relays. Individually, Landon Gerig, Jack McCarty, Alex Beard and Kyra Norstrom each won three events for Holiday. Gerig had the fastest times in the 11-12 boys IM, free and breaststroke. McCarty took fi rst in the 15-18 boys IM, fl y and breaststroke. Beard touched the wall fi rst in the 15-18 girls IM, fl y and back- stroke. Norstrom won the 11- 12 girls IM, fl y and backstroke. Claire Hicks, Ella Gerig and Vinny Arnold won two events. Hicks placed fi rst in the 8-and-under girls fl y and backstroke. Gerig swam the fastest times in the 9-10 girls free and breaststroke. Arnold won the 9-10 boys free and breast- stroke. Girls freestyle winners were Ava Privratsky (8-and-under), Emma Anderson (11-12) and Kassy Winters (15-18).
