As a bargaining team member for our last contract I know that when members stand up together and don’t back down we can win big. Members always say, "We deserve to be treated fairly!" I know the best way to win is to work together. 3 Mark sure Specials Coalition members have a strong voice in our more than 40,000-member union. As a Central Table Bargaining Team member for our current and best contract ever, I know we can build on our success. We need to stay focused on winning great contracts and bringing healthcare costs down. 4 1) Create and maintain quality communications with ” every member in Specials Coalition and in our union. 2) Educate and motivate members everywhere to help win good contracts, bring healthcare costs down and protect our jobs. 3) Press for a statewide study of job classifications. After a 20-year wait it is long overdue. k | Funding for services is always an issue - whether the economy is doing well or not. Adequate funding is vital to winning good contracts and solving workload issues. We need to press for tax fairness - corporations must pay their fair share. I will continue to fight for creative solutions to fund quality services. gk We’ve made great progress during the past few years. I want to help every member and our union continue to grow and thrive. Getting the word out to the workers about what SEIU is doing is also important. 5 We face challenges externally and internally. I will work to " face those challenges guided by the wishes of the workers, the principles on which SEIU was founded and a profound belief in our purpose as an organization. Lisa Blasch Eugene OR 97402 1 I am a bright, inquisitive person with a ” strong work ethic who loves problem 3 Our 503 is very successful in advancing the causes of working families, and we are now ready to break new ground in worker empowerment by taking a direct role to improve the efficiency of our workplaces. I'm excited to further my engagement in broadening our influence and defending our jobs and benefits with these positive, essential directions. 4 To help insure that the unique interests of local govern ments are well represented in our key decision making body, to focus on effective communications, and to further the cause of bringing more unity, activism, and mutual support between our local governments to increase our success. j Protecting our members jobs and benefits. This is best accomplished by a. meaningful, directed political engagement of electing labor friendly candidates and sponsoring or supporting labor-positive legislation, solving. I'm finishing my PhD in political philosophy, and this gives me strong research, writing and language skills. I have a long term goal of working with a labor union to democratize the workplace and ensure that all jobs provide a decent, humane standard of living. Sixteen years in the caregiving field has familiarized me with the challenges facing the industry, and strengthened my resolve to help unionize it. 2 I have been a union member since 1999. At UO, I was “ department steward in the GTFF local 3544, representing my colleagues in our campaign to improve wages, standardize workloads and protect health care. I have belonged to SEIU local 902 for seven years through OSLP, and became vice- president in 2006. 3 I want to participate in the regional and statewide affairs p of SEIU because it relies on economically diverse alliances b. to both level the playing field and increase our power base by helping unionize our competitors, c. strive to achieve an effective two-way flow of communication with each of our members in every work place, d. provide as much effective training opportunity as a motivated member may desire. e. To choke out motivation for outsourcing by helping our members to take the lead role in achieving better service delivery in an efficient manner. This can also create lower management to worker ratios and self-directed work places which produce a better work atmosphere and dramatically lower operating costs so as to preserve more of our front-line jobs. 4M A primary passion of mine is lending my time and talents to helping working folks and their families. If elected, I promise to give you my best. and supports traditionally non-unionized labor. This will help me learn to be a better organizer and political advocate. Caregivers involved with Local 503 are dispersed throughout many dislocated worksites. We need a strong, independent union culture at each worksite to become more politically adept. Each site can be a link in the chain if its workers are activists and self-advocates. This helps motivate grassroots participation when political campaigns begin. 4 b The PNP sector is rife with the problems of "unskilled" labor: employee and client abuse, low wages and high turnover. We need the benefits associated with "professional" skills: a living wage, provisions for retirement and health benefits that address the aging process. Preparing for the next economic downturn is our most serious challenge, because powerful so-called "conservatives" organize to defund the state and break unions by exploiting budget shortfalls. This promotes economic instability for workers and exacerbates abuse and neglect in our field.
