Morrow County for the past 16 years and transfer to Umatilla County in November of 2007. Residence Hermiston for the past 35 years. I have been active in my work site and have been successful in recruiting new leaders. 31 My decision to run is based on a commitment and willingness to contribute to the best of my ability toward building our union and representing members with respect and integrity. I want to build on the experience I have gained to move our union forward. I am committed to members holding the power to run their union. I believe a strong union is built by the direct involvement and empowerment of workers. I enjoy the challenge of seeking solutions to issues facing members, encouraging and motivating members to take power in the workplace and ownership of their union. 4 GOALS: To increase member activism, by continuing to ” recruit new members and create stronger leadership training program for worksite activists. To recruit new members, to mentor, support and encourage them to be active and involved in their union. To bargain strong contracts for fair wages and defend our healthcare, to protect our pensions, protect workers rights in the work place. OUTSIDE the Union there is a dedicated group of both Oregonians and outsiders who would dismantle our Health Care Benefits, our Union and our ability to work in Oregon's State Legislature. We must pay attention and be prepared to further WORKERS' RIGHTS. Cory S. McIntosh I gained skills for this leadership position with 20+ years as an active member participating in both my DHS Local and District 3 North. Some of the elected positions I held are: local president, vice president, and treasurer and assistance district director. During contract campaigns I participated in Flying Squadron, Contract Action Teams, bargaining delegate and co-chair for the Human Services Coalition (HSC), (OED + DHS) q Independence OR 97351 1 4 years President of DMV Local 735; ™ 4 years Statewide Chief Steward DMV Local 735; 5 terms DMV Local 735 bargaining delegate; 2 terms ODOT bargaining Coalition Co-chair; 8 years DMV Local 735 General Council delegate; 4 years CAPE Board; 2007 DAS Central Table bargaining team chair 2 Once I understood the connection between my paycheck, ” a good contract and politics, I became a C.A.P.E. contributor at 9.6 cents an hour. I phone bank, canvass and lobby at the legislature and home district. I am an active Member of the Committee to Recall the President of SEIU 503. As a member of the Mid-Valley Recall Squad, I collect recall petition signatures from across employer groups and from across the state. Our restructured Board is providing the opportunity for “ HSC to have a more direct voice in the decision making of our Union. My experience with contract enforcement, campaigns and elected offices gives me the skills to bring our collective voice to the table. My goals at the Board include implementing our new Union structure successfully, building membership strength for worksite empowerment. We also need to grow more political strength to achieve health care for all and improved funding of public services. 4 HSC needs strategic plans as it faces downsizing, " contracting out and public attacks on the critical services our members provide. These realities can be dealt with by passing legislation that holds contractors accountable and strengthening contract language to give displaced workers more options. We are experiencing unprecedented internal attacks ™ on the solidarity of our Local from the current president. By serving on the Board, I can help our Union continue to be an effective force for the workers it represents. Our Union will continue its commitment to improving the lives of working families - all of them. 6 I listen. I care. And, it's what Lucy would do! Past Chair of the Rules Committee and the 2006 General Council Resolution Review Committee. Member of the 2003 and 2005 Restructure Committees. I worked hard to bring about the change to SEIU 503, oPEU's structure. I think it only right to help with the work that the next board will have to do to put these mechanisms in place and so that members know what is going on with their union. As for my goals, they are to help create a communication structure that increases involvement of a broader segment of our membership, to find new ways for rank and file members to become involved with our/their Union, and to help create an environment where all member voices are encouraged and heard. j wf 4 The ODOT Coalition is made up of employees from many ” different job classifications and backgrounds. They share the common value of wanting to provide quality services to the citizens of Oregon but at the same time deserving respect for that work. My goal is to unite our coalition and work towards having all ODOT coalition agencies show our members the respect they deserve. 5 Our union is divided. At the same time we are beginning a new era in our Union's history. Our new structure provides us an opportunity to fix some of the problems that existed in the old structure. However, if not implemented correctly, the potential exists to have less member involvement instead of more. I want to help lead the creation of process and procedures that ensures that all SEIU members have access and input on all board discussions and decisions. Employment Sector Seat 4 (One member employed by an agency in the Specials Coalition of DAS) To continue building a strong political program, to elect pro-worker legislatures and hold them accountable. Mexican Solidarity Network working to protect the rights of indigenous people to live on and work their lands; Jobs With Justice. 2 Continue leading the way for workers rights and making our leaders responsive to working families; hold all candidates accountable to stand with us in our struggles and commit to changing the conditions that make those struggles necessary. Design world class services and work with leaders to make them happen. j Develop a working communication network. When members are informed, they will take action. Utilize technology to cross Local and industry lines and unite with each other to move programs that make all of us stronger by bringing awareness of the issues that are plaguing our members so we can strategize ways to address them. j Our survival as a political force. Fight Bill Sizemore who wants to silence our voices and other ballot measures that will deplete the services that make Oregon work; ensure that any worker who wants to join a union will have the right to do that; and expect that any candidate we endorse will get into the trenches with us or they won't get our support. e g k I have marched in Seattle and Cancun against the WTO; ” walked indigenous lands of Mexico; and met with workers in Columbia and Venezuela and seen first hand their courage in I have a good familiarity with SEIU organization, operations and its goals and philosophies, based on my nearly 15 years as steward and six years as vice president of the DAS local. 1 j As I write, it is the end of January and storming. I just finished five hours of sleep after a 15 hour work shift. I am still excited about the work of the Union, despite my lack of sleep and long work hours. I know that every Union member has days like this, and that they are excited about Oregon. Exciting is also how I describe the work our Union does for our members and our citizens. Goals for SEIU 503 - Our Union works for a better future for all Oregonians. Our fully paid Health Care, Fair Wages and Safe Working Conditions continue to be my goals, our goals, for all Oregonians. ^7 goals f°r ODOT Coalition are to build stronger alliances and to communicate better. Our membership has the knowledge and resources to build a strong Union, negotiate better contracts and continue to educate our membership. 4 I see two large issues facing our Union. INTERNALLY, I see divisions forming among the SEI U 503 OPEU leadership. As leaders, I believe our responsibilities are to set aside personal differences and to represent the concerns of our fellow laborers. Strife within our Union will make it difficult to progress Health Care, Safety, Quality Services and Fair Wages against external organizations. 21 1 have been a General Council Delegate twice and a * bargaining delegate for Specials Coalition three times, including one as a co-chair, which also gave me a seat at Central Table bargaining for State employees. j To contribute however I can ensuring the board establishes a course of calm deliberation and sensible decision making that is in the members' best interest and that if maintain an operating environment of respect with a sense of community. Simply stated, good representation through good listening and follow-up advocating. But also, good explanation to members that can attest to sound reasoning as to how and why decisions are made; to push the board in this direction as a matter of its practice. g We need to re-affirm faith in our elected leadership through sound ethics, commitment to service, fiscal responsibility and responsive communication. The latter means getting past clichés and tired generalizations to candid and astute dialogue with an eagerness to listen to all sincere voices. Now than ever, as leaders we need to be trustworthy, approachable and responsive. While Union may begin with "You," integrity begins with a capital "I". g This is a timely opportunity to bring our leadership and membership together in the solidarity and community we deserve and need as SEIU continues to establish itself as the most respected and influential union in Oregon.
