25 1 our Astoria Chapter. This- has been somewhat difficult in obtaining, since the O.S.E.A. was first organized in 1942. May, 1943, the Astoria Chapter was issued a charter from the O.S.E.A. At the first B election of officers, BroWney Bangert, who now lives in Salem, was elected president, and at present is bridge foreman working out of Albany, Ore. Our first secretary after O.S:E;A. charter was Fred El- lum. The first director to' represent the Astoria Chapter was LeRoy *Boldt; the first delegate, George Perkiife, ,who held such office until his death last, June. The attendance of the regular meet ings for the first two years was small, with never more'' than seven being present. At present, the chapter has a membership of sixty^f- Since its inception, the members of the Astoria c h a p t e r feel that the O.S.E.A. has accomplished a great deal to better working conditions for all employees. However, there is at present some criticism as to monthly pay days. This was discussed considerably ,at the June meeting. Several of the members pointed out that pay checks arrived between the 12 th and 23 rd of each month, which is quite embarrassing for those who have bills due the first of each month. The new Civil Service System was discussed in general ^ and received com- ments both pro and con. However, the general opinion of all members con cerned was favorable, and we feel' as time goes on that more will be ac complished through the O.S.E.A., or ganization.
