our Astoria Chapter. This- has been
somewhat difficult in obtaining, since
the O.S.E.A. was first organized in
1942.
May, 1943, the Astoria Chapter
was issued a charter from the O.S.E.A.
At the first B election of officers,
BroWney Bangert, who now lives in
Salem, was elected president, and at
present is bridge foreman working out
of Albany, Ore. Our first secretary
after O.S:E;A. charter was Fred El-
lum. The first director to' represent the
Astoria Chapter was LeRoy *Boldt; the
first delegate, George Perkiife, ,who held
such office until his death last, June.
The attendance of the regular meet
ings for the first two years was small,
with never more'' than seven being
present. At present, the chapter has a
membership of sixty^f-
Since its inception, the members of
the Astoria c h a p t e r feel that the
O.S.E.A. has accomplished a great deal
to better working conditions for all
employees. However, there is at present
some criticism as to monthly pay days.
This was discussed considerably ,at the
June meeting. Several of the members
pointed out that pay checks arrived
between the 12 th and 23 rd of each
month, which is quite embarrassing for
those who have bills due the first of
each month.
The new Civil Service System was
discussed in general ^ and received com-
ments both pro and con. However, the
general opinion of all members con
cerned was favorable, and we feel' as
time goes on that more will be ac
complished through the O.S.E.A., or
ganization.
