LETTERS TO THE EETTOR
Letter to the Editor:
TO: Tribal Members:
I would like to thank
the members that voted and
got me in as a Council
Member.
It was quite a
surprise to me on the
number of votes I received,
and I thank each person for
those votes. I will do my
best for the Tribe and will
listen to the members. The
last two General Council
meetings, prayer was talked
about for our Council and I
would ask the people to
remember me and the other
Council in their prayers that
the decisions we make will
be in the best interest of the
Tribe.
I work for the Bureau
of Indian Affairs and had to
request a waiver from the
Bureau to run for Council. I
have had quite a few people
ask about the waiver and
want to let tribal members
know that I did receive a
waiver from the Assistant
Secretary of Indian Affairs
dated February 1,1990.

O nce again we are
faced with the prospect of
stopping the closure of the
Siletz School. Fortunately, we
had enough notice this time to
be able to band together with
the community to begin wqrk
on stopping this latest attack
on the Silez School.
We

Improvement Committee (FIC)
was
p r o p o s in g
s e v e ra l
changes, and some closures, of
schools w ithin our County.
What we found out at the Siletz
L o ca l
S ch o o l
C o m m itte e
Meeting on February 20th that
the proposal WAS NOT drafted
by the F IC ,but by school
d is tric t personnel, including
Fred W right ,
D irector of
Facilities & Maintenance, and
Mike Kinney, D irector
of
Curriculum and
Instruction,
amongst others. The FIC had no
input into the draft proposal
for school closures. THIS FEELS
LIKE RAILROADING TO ME, AND
IT MUST SE STOPPED,
One of the proposals is
to close the S iletz M iddle
School^ and to convert some of
the actual classroom space and
other buildings, (music room,
locker rooms) into storage for
th e
school
d is tr ic t.
In
conjunction, it was proposed
that additional classrooms be
built at Toledo Middle School as
w ell as co n stru ctio n of a
re g u la tio n
siz e d
fo o tb a ll,
so ftb a ll and baseball field
complex.Where does this leave
S ile tz? Is ou r elem e ntary
school next?
As brought out during
the m eeting, S iletz School
enrollm ent today is at the
capacity projected fo r 1995.
With building of the homes in
th e
S ila t c h e e
P a rk
Subdivision,and the additional
hom es fo rth c o m in g ,
it is
obvious that school enrollment
w ill fa r exceed, p ro je cte d
amounts. And with the decline
in
e n ro llm e n t
of
o th e r
schools,WHY IS SILETZ BEING
TARGETED FOR CLOSURE? Why
not add additional classrooms
to meet the growing needs
here?

Council has passed Resolution
# 9 0 -6 9 ,
w h ic h
opposes
closure of the Siletz Middle
School and conversion of the
buildings and classroom spaces
for storage. They, also,support
return of the Siletz High School
and requested a plan from the
FIC and School D istrict on
return of the High School.
Now is the tim e for
action. Please take the time to
send your written concerns to
the follow ing people. MAKE
