PAGE 2 - JULY, 1985, SILETZ, OREGON Council Chairman’s Report Delores Pigsley FROM THE CHAIRMAN: The previous T ribal N ew sletter and a recent edition of the Newport News carried articles regarding recent tribal tim ber sales. The articles have created m isunder standing, rum ors, dem ands for p er capita paym ents and allegations of m isuse of tribal funds. This is unfortunate and very harm ful to the economic efforts of our tribe. We have established two objectives for use of tribal tim ber funds. We fund the operations of our T ribal Council and we w ant to increase our economic base by using tim ber funds to help finance other economic developm ent efforts. With reg ard to the second goal, we have three m ajor projects underw ay. F irst, we a re attem pting to increase our tim berland base. We a re working with state and local governm ents, various federal agencies, other tribes and our congressional delegation. Second, we are locating and purchasing land for housing industrial development. Finally, we a re gathering information from various other tribes regarding economic developm ent successes and failures. During this process, we have involved staff, tribal m em bers and Council m em bers. Everyone has worked hard and has dem onstrated initiative and sound judgm ent in working toward our goals. We do not intend to repeat m istakes m ade by others. P rogress is being m ade but our goals will not be accom plished overnight. We also are exploring taking over m anagem ent of our forestry program . By the tim e you read this, the Council probably will have decided w hether to leave m anagem ent of our m ost im portant economic resource to others or to do it ourselves. In sum m ary, much work is being done to enhance the economic status of our Tribe. As individual m em bers, you do not see the results yet, but if you a re patient, one day you will see our Tribe stand independent politically and economically. Sincerely, Delores Pigsley Tribal C hairm an SILETZ NEWS TED WERTH EDITOR Letters To The Editor D ear E ditor: Recently I learned th at several y ears ago, during the sum m er of 1978, the Tribe organized a sim ilar Culture Inform ation g ath er ing project a s is now ongo ing. I w as very sad to learn th at one of the 1978 Project S u p e rv is o rs , R am ona Sauvage, moved from the S ile tz a r e a w ith i r r e placeable tapes and w ritten in te rv ie w s of T r ib a l m em bers in her possession. These m aterials w ere in tended to rem ain in Siletz for all our future use. As the Siletz Area Culture & H is to ry I n f o r m a tio n G atherer, I feel obliged to .m ak e th e e n tire T rib a l m em bership aw are of. this situation. Many of you that willingly donated your tim e for th at project m ay be wondering, w hatever hap pened to all th at inform a tion. Simply, m uch of it is LOST! It will be lost forever, UNLESS, we can locate R am ona Sauvage! If anyone has inform ation th at m ay lead to contacting Ram ona an d reg ain in g access to those m aterials please call the Inform ation G atherer or Culture Comm ittee m em ber in your area. Many of the E lders interviewed in 1978 a re now deceased. Hopefully Ms. Sauvage has m aintained the collection in tact and would willingly provide a c cess to the inform ation once contacted. Personally, I feel it is very im portant th a t R am ona be contacted as soon as possi ble. Please, sh are any infor m ation th at m ay help find her before it is too late. Sincerely, Denise A. Wilson M essage Phone: 444-2532 Home Phone : 444-2234 Revenues. The Council is spending this money and I feel we the people have a right to ask for a w ritten report from each Council m em ber that traveled for Econoic Development, not a w ritten report from their staff but from the Council m em bers. We see the tim e sheets and dollars spent for Council pay but travel is also c o m in g fr o m T im b e r Revenues. T ravel includes m e a ls , ro o m s, m ile a g e , plane fares, c a r rentals, etc. If the people do not keep up on the spending, the Council can use a ll of T im b er Revenues, the money they would not authorize to be given to the people. The Council is running a big b u sin ess an d re m e m b e r Tribal m em bers, you are ow ners of th is business. Also, if you as Tribal people have concerns, let those con cerns be known and follow upon on concerns. We wrote a letter to the Council in F eb ru ary on a concern and have not received even a let ter of acknowledgem ent on th at concern. Reginald Bulter To the E ditor: In recent weeks I ’ve read a rtic le s re g a rd in g C hief W illia m D e P o e ’s “ o u t standing and valuable ser v ic e s s u p p o rtin g In d ia n E ducation” .
