Council
Chairman’s
Report
Delores Pigsley
FROM THE CHAIRMAN:
The previous T ribal N ew sletter and a recent edition of
the Newport News carried articles regarding recent tribal
tim ber sales. The articles have created m isunder
standing, rum ors, dem ands for p er capita paym ents and
allegations of m isuse of tribal funds. This is unfortunate
and very harm ful to the economic efforts of our tribe.
We have established two objectives for use of tribal
tim ber funds. We fund the operations of our T ribal Council
and we w ant to increase our economic base by using
tim ber funds to help finance other economic developm ent
efforts.
With reg ard to the second goal, we have three m ajor
projects underw ay. F irst, we a re attem pting to increase
our tim berland base. We a re working with state and local
governm ents, various federal agencies, other tribes and
our congressional delegation. Second, we are locating and
purchasing land for housing industrial development.
Finally, we a re gathering information from various other
tribes regarding economic developm ent successes and
failures.
During this process, we have involved staff, tribal
m em bers and Council m em bers. Everyone has worked
hard and has dem onstrated initiative and sound judgm ent
in working toward our goals. We do not intend to repeat
m istakes m ade by others. P rogress is being m ade but our
goals will not be accom plished overnight.
We also are exploring taking over m anagem ent of our
forestry program . By the tim e you read this, the Council
probably will have decided w hether to leave m anagem ent
of our m ost im portant economic resource to others or to
do it ourselves.
In sum m ary, much work is being done to enhance the
economic status of our Tribe. As individual m em bers, you
do not see the results yet, but if you a re patient, one day
you will see our Tribe stand independent politically and
economically.
Sincerely,
Delores Pigsley

Revenues. The Council is
spending this money and I
feel we the people have a
right to ask for a w ritten
report from each Council

Econoic Development, not a

If the people do not keep up

would not authorize to be
