Page 4— Vernonia Freedom Thursday June 18,1981 Poker Run for Ridge Riders by Rosemarie Ruehmann Saturday, June 13 the Vernonia Ridge Riders had a Poker Run on horses. There was a $13 entry fee to enter the ride. Nine riders rode. Four come from Seaside to ride with our club. The ride started at 11:00 at Anderson Park and ended at 4:00. We rode from Anderson Park down the railroad tracks and across the river by Sword’s field up into the brush toward John Siedelman’s place. The ride was set up by John Siedelman and his daughter Rosemarie. The nine riders rode in groups of three. Kathy McDonald, Art Lamping and Rosemarie Ruehmann were in the first group. The second group was Barbara McDonald, Lou Walker, Sherrie Reynolds. The last group consisted of Lynn Reynolds and two riders from Seaside. There were seven different cans filled with bottle caps, nails, nuts, screws, com seed, roofing nails, empty .22 shells and washers. A single string was hung just past each can. The cans were hidden in the brush on stumps, between trees and on the ground. If you missed the string that meant you went too far past the cans and had to go back and find the can. At the end of the ride in the park a poker hand was drawn by all riders. First Place * $13 - A rider from Seaside. Second Place - $9 - Kathy McDonald. Third Place - $5 - Art Lamping. Ridge Riders meetings are held the last Thursday of every month at the West Oregon Electric building at 7:30 pm. New members are always welcome. Call 429-9172 for more information. Timbernook Restaurant now open for business Over 100 people were on hand last Monday night to help Mel and Alice Randall celebrate the opening of the Timbernook Restaurant for business. Although an oven refused to work properly, limiting the menu somewhat, no one seemed to mind as they gathered in groups to talk and wander over the premises inspecting the nearly completed structure. The Randall’s are planning a public Grand Opening for June 27. For details call 429-0805. PEO plans convention The Oregon State Chapter of the PEO International Sisterhood will convene June 18-20 in Corvallis. Mrs. Ben Brickel and Mrs. Sam Hearing, Jr. will attend as delegates from chapter BS in Vernonia. Recipients of $37,205 in scholarships will be announced at the convention. PEO is an international women’s organization formed in 1869 having as a goal the increasing of educational opportunities for women. OBITUARY Clyde E. May Clyde E. May, 82, late a resident of Timber Route, Vernonia, died Monday, June 8 at the Tuality Community Hospital in Hillsboro, following an extended illness. Funeral services were held at the Fuiten Mortuary Chapel in Forest Grove on Thursday June 11 at 2:30 pm with the Rev. Charles Dailey, pastor of the Church of Christ in Vancouver, officiating and Steve Hopper, pastor of the Vernonia Evangelical Church, assisting. Concluding rites and interment were at the Forest View Cemetery, Forest Grove. Clyde Edward May was bom in Portland January 28,1899, the son of the late Willis and Sarah Hutchison May and he spent all of his early life in Portland and Washington County. Mr. May had engaged in the logging, lumbering and forestry work from 1923 until his retirement. He worked for the Federal Forest Service in C.C.C. camp work in Northwest Oregon from 1933 until 1941 and later for the Oregon State Forestry from 1941 until 1946. Mixed couples tourney Mr. May had spent most of his life in Northwest Oregon and had lived in the Vernonia area since 1943, first living at the Pittsburgh Guard station and then moving to his home on Timber Route in 1946. In 1946 he went to work for Crown Zellerbach working for them in road building and fire protection from 1946 until his retirement in 1963. He was a member of the International Woodworkers of America Local No. 314. The first night of Friday Mixed Couples play was held Friday, June 12 at the Vernonia Golf and Country Club. The game, Chapman style competition, produced two winning teams. First Place was captured by Ruth Nogle and Dan Fletcher with a combined score of 29 3/4 points while 31 Vt points were enough to assure Edna Hailey and Mick Nogle of Second Place honors. These mixed couples games are a regularly scheduled feature each Friday evening at 6 pm through the end of September at VGCC. He was married to Lena Gerig at Vancouver, Washington September 13, 1920 and she preceeded him in death here in November 1977. Surviving is a daughter, Ruth May Sisseck, Vancouver; a brother, Hugh May, Portland; two sisters, Mrs. Alva Eppers, Post Falls, Idaho and Mrs. Vernon (Isadora) Rings, Salem; four grandchildren; ten great grandchildren and five great-great- grandchildren. A son, Clyde was killed in action in World War II.
