The SRA Achievement survey measured achievement of first grade students in reading and mathematics, while second and third graders were tested in three Fourth of July fireworks show It's time to begin making plans for your Fourth of July celebrations and the Vernonia Chamber of Commerce would like to invite you to the annual display, at the fireworks Vernonia High School football field. This year’s display, even bigger and better than last year’s, will also include a food concession manned by the Vernonia Fire Department. Donations will be collected after the show to help defray the almost $1000 cost of the display. Bring your families early and spend the day fishing, shopping or picnicing and remember; make your plans now to be there. Mist-Birkenfeld Road Runners didn’t let the weather stop the run. Ed Klien won first place over all in the two mile race in the men’s category, running it in 12:22 minutes. Over all winner in the two mile race in the women’s category, Claudia Oblack running it in 19:34 minutes. Placing first over all for the men in the 10,000 meter (6.2 miles) was Dave Thomas with a time of 34:48. Number one over all for the women in the 10,000 meter was Kim Meacham with a time of 46:26. In the test, the average score for all first grade pupils in reading achievement was at the 67th percentile, considerably higher than the national norm - 50th percentile. The mean score for second graders in reading was even higher, ranking at the 72nd pecentile nationally. The third grade students scored at the 50th percentile, the national norm. The second grade students again scored very high in mathematics with a mean score of the 76th percentile. The first grade students scored at the 51st percentile and the third grade scored below the national norm at the 43rd percentile. In language arts, the mean scores for second graders was the 60th percentile and third graders scored at the 57th percentile. The national norm is at the 50th percentile. District superintendent, Art Parrow, noted, “This data supports the belief among Vernonia School administrators that the primary school instructional program in the basic skills is outstanding.’’ Nehalem Folk Art Festival set Two days of free continuous live stage entertainment heads the attractions planned for the Fourth Annual Nehalem Valley Folk Art Festival to be held at the Jewell School on June 27 and 28. A wide variety of stage ac£s, including blue grass, gospel and Twenties bands, as well as folk skill demonstrations, home-made craft and food sales and a quilt fair are also scheduled. The festival will be highlighted by a huge square dance from 6 pm until dark Saturday night. A complete schedule of events is provided on page five.
