Unfortunately, just the opposite occurs - with the yield greatly reduced due to excessive crowding. Remember, those plants need room to grow to maturity. If you don’t give them that necessary room, growth is stunted and disease is invited because of unhealthy plants. Save those seed packets and follow their directions on thinning. After such a prolonged and cool, wet spring, I’m sure most gardens were planted much later than usual. Except for some,early peas, lettuce and radishes, our garden was planted on a warm sunny Sunday, the last day of May. Even then the soil was not what we wanted it to be in terms of tilth or dryness. Because of trying to hurry things along, I tried to till too soon resulting in some very hard lumps of clay on top of some very damp soil. After tilling, I mounded the soil in rows to a height of about 10 inches, in an effort to speed up drainage and taise the soil temperature. Evidently, all this effort paid off. All plantings germinated well, and in only 10 days, everything was “up”. Raised bed gardening now has another convert! I don’t know what kind of problems I’m going to encounter later on, but for now, I’m impressed. One additional advantage. You don’t have to bend over quite so far which made my back much easier to live with after planting. Although I’ve mentioned it before, you should not under estimate the value of proper thinning. The tendency of most new gardeners is to While on the subject of thinning, remember that many plants can be transplanted now to areas where adequate germination did not occur. Again, instructions on the seed packet will often say, “thin or transplant” to the required distance apart in the row. Also remember that many vegetables are delicious when very small and can be used green in salads or cooked as “greens”. As an example, in the case of beets, I usually thin them at least twice, leaving them closer in the row than the directions indicate. Then, as they grow, thin them for cooking, including some of the small beets in- the dish. If you have never tried this, you are in for a real treat! SPRING SPECIALS! SAVE! Now that the weather is starting to warm up, be especially wary of sun and wind burn on tomato and pepper plants. Although it hasn’t been necessary this year, I have used old shingles to provide shade for these plants during hot afternoons. Somehow, I don’t think it’s going to be a big problem this year, but you never know. Ladie's play Name Your Club Eight ladies played a game called Name Your Club Tuesday night at the Vernonia Golf Club. Glenda Alford was the winner and Ruth Nogle was runner up.
