The Brooks d idn’t look as sharp p articularly in the fourth qu arter, as in past encounters, but still had enough to stave off the P an th ers in th eir second m eeting of th e season. E arlier the Brooks had beaten Gold Beach by 10 points in th eir home bailiw ick. Jum ping off to a 10-4 first quar-J ter lead w ith six of th e points contributed by Ron Bullock, the outcom e of the gam e w as never in doubt, although Gold Beach managed to close the gap to only two points late in th e fourth q u a r ter against the Brook reserves. At half tim e the B ruins sported I i six point advantage, w hich w as th e w av things stood most of th e tim e. They led 41-29 at th e end of the th ird period, before Gold Beach put pn a late spurt. M arv Mullock, rangy junior, w as high point m an w ith th irteen points, n etting them all in th e second and th ird q u arters. Ron Bullock contributed 12, Bill Work- inger 11, and Ron Lane eight. T erry Tim eus, speedy P an th er guard, pushed in 15 points for Gold Beach, w hile D elm er K yle added 14 points. The Ju n io r V arsity team , opera ting as perfections, poured in 24 points in the first q u arte r to w al lop Gold Beach 57-33 in the p re lim inary gam e S atu rd ay night. Jim G ribble hit for seven points, Dule R utledge for six, and Jim Cam pbell for six in the first q u arte r as the Ju n io r Brooks raced to a big lead. The pace slow ed in the second q u arter, b ut they still held a 34-21 lead over the Ju n io r P anthers. In the th ird fram e th e Brooks added an o th er 13 points to pull aw ay still fu rth er, holding Gold Beach to a m ere three points 47- 23. S. National Deposits Told The U nited States National b ank in its year-end report shows a deposit total of more th an .84 m illion dollars. The Brookings branch reported deposits in the am ount of $4.513.- 525 05, according to K J. Kirk, m anager. Total resources for the state w ide system stood at $861.346,654. an increase of b etter than 13 m il lion dollars. Loans and discounts now total $337,926.885. a 12-month gain in excess of $28.800.000 Loans and discounts for the Brookings branch now total $3.396.732.27. ‘•The past y ear has been one of increased service at U. S. N ation al.” K. J K irk com mented. “The recent increase in savings interest rate to 2 4 per cent \^as a high light of th e y ear end." He also pointed out th at 3 per cent w ill be paid on 3 year certifi- cates of deposit issued after Ja n u ary 1. In terest on these new certi ficates w ill be paid sem i-anhually at U. S. N ational. In review ing the year 1956, E. C Sammons. U. S N ational presi- 1 dent, pointed out th at the bank added tw o new branches during the past 12 m onths—-one at Coos Bay and the new E astport Plaza b ranch in P o rtland. Five new buildings w ere com pleted includ ing O regon's fisrt com plete motor bank, located in dow ntow n P o rt land. The building program is continuing into 1957, w ith new buiildings to serve A lbany and N ew berg scheduled for comple-
