Luke Fadling* is recoveringg from Red-Throated Loon C1952 National Wildlife Federation ever seeing or hearing one of these birds The red-throated loon, with a length of 27 inches overall, is some five inches shorter than a full growm common loon. It lacks the conspicuous black head and neck band of the common loon though it is w hite underneath and has the breast striped w ith black and white. The th ro a t of the red-throated loon has a conspicu ous chestnut triangle at its lower edge. In w inter the bird is dusky above. The sexes are colored (alike. Breeding of the red-throated loon takes place from northern Alaska and the w estern Aleutians south to northern British Colum bia and east to Greenland. New foundland and Quebec. It also breeds in Europe and Asia. O ur w inter range of the species ex tends south to F lorida and the region of Lower C alifornia n ear est to the United S tates, for the most part. The red-throated loon has been suspected of feeding on fish eggs and it is known to m ake a large part of its diet of fish which it catches by diving and pursuit under w ater. Because of these habits it h|as been considered as undesirable, but what would a sum m er be in the wilds of C an ada or northern United S tates w ithout the opportunity of list ening to some loons “talk things •over” on the o th er side of the lake in the middle of the night. During m igration the birds have a rem arkably strong direct /lig h t. If through ,accident or otherw ise they happen to come to earth in m igration, they prob ably will end th eir days where fom e down since they cannot “take ofT" except from w ater. In New England the southern m igration is about at its height in October. A poet has concisely described the overground mi gration of the bird as "the sure, swift flight of loons.” Words ! would hardly improve this de scription. The nest is nothing but ia m ere depression hidden on the bank of a lake or stream . T here are u sually 2 eggs, each about 3 inches long, highly variable in color and cither spotted with drab brown or plain. Both sexes take p art in the 4- week incubation period and the downy chicks are dark gnav above and drab.
