A couple of w eeks ago, according to previous s tra w votes, th e D em o crats had th e R epublicans on th e run. T h e G rand Old P a r ty seem ed to lx* ru n n in g out of steam . It is to the ev e rlastin g sh am e of c e rta in w eakkneed R epublican le a d e rs th at they joined in th e chorus for th e rem oval of Nixon as th e ir Vice P resid en tial can d id ate. Did they believe th a t w e w ould go along w ith them in th e ir p u rjjo se? How stu p id do they th in k we a r e ? How dum b do they believe us to b e? N ixon gave us a ch an ce to an sw er these questions. He sp o k e to us o v er th e radio and on television. F o rty m illions of us listened to him. As he ta lk e d every m o th e r in the g re at au d ien ce heard h er son talk in g . E very fa th e r felt his eyes m o isten as Nivon told his story. It is not n ecessary h ere to re la te o u r reaction. It is now’ w ell know n to all of us because m ost of us have given Nivon o u r full, com plete and e n th u s ia s tic sup|x>rt. P erh ap s, m aybe th a t is w here it should be placed T im e will tell. But over and beyond his personal hopes and political a sp ira tio n s Dick Nixon gave us som ething m ore.
