How stupid can politicians g e t? How du m b can people b e?
A couple of w eeks ago, according to previous s tra w votes,
th e D em o crats had th e R epublicans on th e run. T h e G rand Old
P a r ty seem ed to lx* ru n n in g out of steam . It began to look as
if S tev en so n w as a gtxxl bet to win.
T h en th e D em o crats bro k e th e N ixon story. T hese g en try
n ib b ed th e ir hands in an ticip atio n and ch o rtled in glee as they
c o n tem p lated th is assum ed d e a th blow to R epublican hopes.
It is to the ev e rlastin g sh am e of c e rta in w eakkneed R epublican
le a d e rs th at they joined in th e chorus for th e rem oval of Nixon
as th e ir Vice P resid en tial can d id ate. B efore th e ir intense
scram b le for poli tical pow er, in th e face of th e ir m ad desire
to fa tte n them selves at th e public trough, in th e ir loud and sly
Inuendoes, th e ruin of a m a n 's life and his in te g rity w as as
nothing.
Did they believe th a t w e w ould go along w ith them in
th e ir p u rjjo se? How stu p id do they th in k we a r e ? How dum b
do they believe us to b e?
N ixon gave us a ch an ce to an sw er these questions. He
sp o k e to us o v er th e radio and on television. F o rty m illions
of us listened to him. As he ta lk e d every m o th e r in the g re at
au d ien ce heard h er son talk in g . E very fa th e r felt his eyes
m o isten as Nivon told his story.
It is not n ecessary h ere to re la te o u r reaction. It is now’
w ell know n to all of us because m ost of us have given Nivon
o u r full, com plete and e n th u s ia s tic sup|x>rt. W e shall now go
to th e ¡»oils on next election dav and vote him into office. N ixon
am i E isenhow er will lx* elected. Do we here put th e c a rt before
th e horse. P erh ap s, m aybe th a t is w here it should be placed T im e
will tell.
But over and beyond his personal hopes and political
a sp ira tio n s Dick Nixon gave us som ething m ore. He gave us
a ch an ce to rem ove th e scales from o u r eyes. H e gave us a
p ersp ectiv e of w h at could hapjx'n am ong us. F o r th e past five
y e a rs we have been asleep. He w oke us up and aw akened we
d eclared to stu p id p oliticians th a t we sta n d for decency and
Ju stice am ong m en. Now. aw akened, we proclaim th a t we a re
th ro u g h w ith listening to lies ami double ta lk and insidious
pro|x>ganda. Now a re aw ak e and we begin ask in g ourselves
q u estio n s as “W hy a re w e stan d in g idly at th e cross ro a d s ? ”
“Whv a re we w astin g o u r s u s te n a n c e ? " “ W hy do we continue
to fiddle w hile th e w orld b u rn s about u s ? " “ Is life so sw eet,
or peace so d ear, o r projx rty so v alu ab le as to be purchased
at th e p rice of chains am i slavferv ? ” Is A m erica, g re at in its
stre n g th ami resources, honest in its hopes and desires, religious
in its h e rita g e of freedom , d estin ed to occupy th e role of a
crav en ami a co w ard ? “S hall we add to th e chaos of th e w orld
by o u r vacillation and in e p titu d e and d isre g a rd of hum an
s u ffe rin g ? ”
If we a re tim id or c a lc u la tin g we a re lost. If we a re stro n g
am i honest we shall survive am i go on to g re a te r glory. If we
h av e sublim e fa ith in th e rig h tio n ess of o u r cause w e shall be
saved. No m a tte r how hart! th e fight, how g re at th e cost o r
how long th e night, the fight shall be won, th e cost paid and
th e d ay shall follow the night. •
W e th an k Dick N ixon fo r brin g in g this to o u r a tte n tio n .
