They passed th ro u g h one place in T ex as w h ere it ra in s only once in In the days of Samuel Lancaster and the other Highway Pioneers, the scenic loops and curves and grades of the Columbia Highway were built far above the river, w ith picks and shovels, fresnos. m ules and men; also black powder, star drills and a sledge. But, w hen the Moderns ironed out the curves, took the grades down along the w ater-route and blasted their way through the foot of the bluffs, they did it with huge suction dredges, dynam ite, bulldozers and deisel oil. They made the barn-sized boulders into base material to fill the low spots until now you never feel a bump w hen you ride the road be tw een Dodson and Bonneville w here the boulders blocked the way w hen the above picture was taken. Construction like that costs approxim ately a third of a m illion dollars per m ile.
