In the days of Samuel Lancaster and the other Highway Pioneers, the scenic loops and curves and grades
of the Columbia Highway were built far above the river, w ith picks and shovels, fresnos. m ules and
men; also black powder, star drills and a sledge. But, w hen the Moderns ironed out the curves, took
the grades down along the w ater-route and blasted their way through the foot of the bluffs, they did
it with huge suction dredges, dynam ite, bulldozers and deisel oil. They made the barn-sized boulders
into base material to fill the low spots until now you never feel a bump w hen you ride the road be
tw een Dodson and Bonneville w here the boulders blocked the way w hen the above picture was taken.
Construction like that costs approxim ately a third of a m illion dollars per m ile.
