BROOKINGS-HARBOR PILOT. BROOKINGS. OREGON //otrr M em ieA. Dewey Akers and Dave Holman, Publishers Subscription Rate: Per Year, in Curry County, Oregon Per Year, outside Curry County...... Boosting For Brookings-Harbor Area! Rarely does it ever appear on the surface—the work in interest of the Brookings-Harbor area the inner workings of the local o r ganization, known as the Brookings-Harbor Chamber of Commerce. With unselfish interests members of this organization work a l most daily, in some manner or another, for the advancement and development of the area, which is their home, as w’ell as other citi- iaens who may criticize the work attempted by this group of men. All men are fallahle and cei*tainly none in the cham ber of commerce can, or will, lay claim to perfection. However, anyone, if he has an open mind, would see while visiting a meeting, men a t work who seem to care “last” for self gain. The local chamber of commerce needs about 50 or 60 more new ,members to help in the program outlined for 1946. These men are needed for the work they may give more than they are needed for the $l-a-month-dues they may pay into the organization. * W ith neither Brookings nor Harbor being incorporated, there is no other civic body present with money or power to act in the in terests of the community. Work in this, like other civic bodies, is voluntary except with the chamber of commerce, the individual al- v n .iru upon io GO, w ith possible exception of expenses of a trip away from Brookings on some m atter. May 25 will be the revival of the Azalea festival, a function which can "put Brookings on the m ap” if properly handled. Hety is needed murk fcelp /row everyone- to make this event one which will attract people from all over the state. Within the next week or ten days many will be called upon for assistance to be given in staging the festival. Please, for the sake of the community, be prepared to do as much, if not more, than is asked o f you. 'Hie area, as well as yourself, will profit. Other civic projects will be coming up from time to tim e—be alert for these and give the same unselfish work. In 1947 and 1948 your reward will come in such ways as g reater civic improvements, more national recognition for the area, and more and more settlers seeking homesites in this area for permanency. It’s the same old story: “Easements.” Several land-owners of the community still hold out on this duty which is pre venting the staking out ot lines in sev eral sections of the area. . I hese easements, contrary to rumors m opposition, do not permit the comnanv to “sieze” your land, or anything o flh e sort—they merely give the company the i iglit to build and maintain lines, on or touching \our property, to remove such obstacles which might hinder this job. He would like the right to trim or re move a tree, the right to set a brace, or guy wire better to strengthen the line, and such privileges. I he speed bv which these easements art signed will determine the time we ran stake out all lines of the area, and ulumately get at construction. It’s up to you, residents of the area it s up to you—please don’t delay!
