MESSAGE FROM THE HILL Hi Folks! Isn’t this great. A new newspaper for Willamina. We hope to use this col umn to let you all know what the City is doing. There are some exciting things go ing on in the City of Willamina. We’re very busy with a number of projects. We’ve just received the final daft on a 20-year projection of improvements to our sewer system and hope to have some recommendations soon on the needs for the future to keep us current and in com pliance with Department of Environ mental Quality regulations. We’re also in the process of apply ing for grants to build a new water sys tem. The treatment plant will be at the same site on the hill but we are going to add another storage tank on the upper end of Hill Drive so the Southwest side of town will have better water pressure. Mid-Willamette Valley Council of Governments is in the process of doing a clay study to see if it is feasible to market the clay around the city. You know we had a brick plant here for 82 years. The resources are still here, we think....... Stay tuned!! We hope to have some concrete pic nic tables in all the parks before long. The old jail site is being cleared and planted to grass. We’ll be putting a walk in Tina Miller Park to make it handi capped accessible. A track around Oaken Hills Park for walkers and jog gers has been completed. It’s close to a quarter mile long....... give it a try. Your Public Works Department is working feverishly to spruce up the town for the Willamina 4th of July Celebra tion. Don’t forget there’s a pancake breakfast at Fendall Hall. Activities downtown will include parade and fire works in the evening. The Museum will be back at the Rebekah Hall . April Wooden and Charlene Brown do a great job of putting this together. Willamina’s 4th of July Celebration a tradition since about 1909. Tina Miller Teen Center will be open with Matthew, Monday through Friday from 12:00 -5:00 P.M. all summer long! We have rollerskating, basketball, tether ball. Somedays there will be ping pong, badmiton and videos. Summer Program starts June 26th, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 1:00-3:00 P.M. with planned activities guided by Aileen. Wednesday 11:00- 1:00 at the library. Remember, 12-5 M-F at the T.M.T.C. Willamina Drop In Center events Activities at the Willamina Drop-In Center 340 B Street have slowed down for the summer. Still continuing are the Wednesday afternoon socials beginning at 1:00 P.M. Persons are invited to come play “spit” cards with the regulars; bring your sewing project; or just drop in for a visit or to get acquainted. For more information call Laura at 876-2774. The second Friday of each month is a bingo potluck with everyone welcome. Please bring a contribution to the potluck which begins sharply at 6:00 P.M. and a prize for the bingo games which follow. For more information call Lucille at 876-3245. The local Chapter 3034 of the American Association of Ritired Persons (AARP) meets the second Thursday from September to May, beginning at 1:00 P.M. The summer months are scheduled for trips, a July picnic and an August “dinner out.” If interested please call Myrtle at 8762842. VFW POST 4211 The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4211 and Auxiliary meets every third Monday of each month at 7:30 P.M. in the Willamina VFW Hall, 771 N.E. Main Street. The groups main focus is helping veterans and their families and assisting other organizations with the Willamina’s Old Fashioned 4th of July, Christmas basket program and other community events. This month we are spotlighting Pastor Dennis Morley Willamina Christian Church LOOKING FOR TRUTH Congratulations to the Willamina Times on its rebirth. This inaugural edition is based on the dreams of its publisher, but I hope, also, on the remembrances of the past Before the days of political correctness, newspapers were known for printing the truth. Truth was honored more than reputation or revenue from advertising or subscription. May the publishers of this paper print the truth for truth’s sake. Truth in a publication like a newspaper is not pure truth. The events are seen through the eyes of reporter and are always written with some bias. We understand and accept the fact. There is truth, however, that is free from human bias. That is truth from God’s perspective. BOOK NOOK WILLAMINA LIBRARY NEWS BLAST OFF WITH BOOKS is the theme for the 1995 summer reading program at Willamina Public Library. The program is designed for readers in grades K-6. The program allows children to maintain reading skills through the summer months and have a good time in the process. Pre schoolers who have books read to them are also encouraged to be in the program The summer reading program will run from June 1 to July 28, and chaildem are invited to stop by the library and register. SALUTE Children who read for five hours (or five books) will receive a certificate from the library. A certificate from the State of Oregon will be presented to those who read ten books. On Wednesdays there will be crafts at 10:30 A.M. and a movie at 11:00 A.M. In July we will have performers coming to the library. A musician, a storyteller and a clown. Stop by the library for more information COMING IN JULY ROSE MADDER-Stephen King The Willamina Neighbor-watch salutes Jena Porter. Hearing an alarm go off in an elderly neighbor’s home, but not feeling comfortable with going in by herself, Jena sought out the neighborhood watch captain. Together they went to the home and established that everything was ok. Here is one example of many that neighborhood watch works. Not only to protect your neighborhood from crime, but also to help you and those in your neighborhood in case of accident or disaster. God always tells us the truth about ourselves and our world. He says we are sinners, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). God’s truthful verdict because of that is “the wages of sin is death”(Romans 6:23).If that was all we were to read that truth would be bitter for us to digest. However those verses that speak the bitter truth about us also speak the beautiful truth about God. It also tells us we...’’are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” Romans 6:23 tells us that “the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” God applied the truth of His love and forgiveness to the truth of our sin and death. Salvation is the result. As Jesus said, “you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free”(John 8:32).May we all be seekers of truth, may we find it in our newspapers; but most importantly, may we find it in the Word of God. The name Lamson is not only substantially identified with the present prosperity of Oregon, but in the old pioneer days was represented injudicial, legislative and agricultural departments of activity. Jeremiah Lamson (b. 1812), was the one who established in family in Oregon. He left Iowa in 1847 with 13 yoke of oxen and three wagons filled with provisions. He spent seven months crossing the plains before reaching his destination in Oregon. In the spring of 1848, he took up a donation land claim of 640 acres on the Willamina river, near the present town of that name. He took prominent part in political and other affairs in his adopted land. He was a member of the first senate which was organized before Oregon became a state. The list goes on and on.... The Lamson family has been a part of our community for generations. And we’re happy to say, still are.
