The Commission on Children and Families is working hard to help facilitate Willamina’s ability to develop its strengths and mobilize it’s own resources. Together with V.O.W. (Volunteers of Willamina), the commission is working towards bringing services and programs back to the community level. The 1995 Phil Sheridan Days Destruction Derby went to the women. The $1000.00 First Place Winner was Susan Fuller , $400.00 Second Place Winner was Chipper Lux., and the $300.00 Third Place Winner was Dennis Dawkins. Willamina has the power to elevate itself and it’s citizens to its full potential, and can be a role model for other communities in the process. Summer D.A.R.E. classes start Mon.- fri. July 10-28 11:00 AM-1:30 PM. It will be at the McMinnville Community Center, 600 N Evans St., McMinnvelle. Any student having completed the 5th grade through 8th grade is welcome. We now call it The Willamina Cemetery. Provide activities, music and food so guests will have diversions from drinking. Serve unsalted, high protein food, especially before you serve alcohol-it will help to slow down alcohol absorption into the bloodstream. Don’t encourage guests to drink too much. The body can safely handle only about one alcoholic drink an hour. Stop serving alcohol about an hour before the party ends. Your guests should be responsible for themselves and appreciative o f your efforts for their safety. How- ever, if you’re concerned that anyone has had too much to drink, don’t let them drive. Don’t take, “I’m fine” for an answer. Offer to drive them home, sleep over at your home or, if necessary, take their keys. We have all, at one time or another, met people who would try to convince you that they could drive safely even though they were clearly intoxicated. DERBY ‘95’ WOMEN CAME ALIVE Recently, V.O.W. held a community ; meeting to identify the services currently being provided in Willamina. There was tremendous participation and enthusiasm for the work the community is doing. It was not difficult to recognize that Willamina’s greatest assets are its residents who are dedicated to making Willamina the best it can be. DID YOU KNOW.... In the heat of the summer sun, everyone wants to stay cool, that means lots of outdoor fun, parties, tall drinks and ice cold beer. Unfortunately, it also means that some people will drink and drive. Each year, 10,000 Oregonians are seriously injured and more than 250 are killed because of drinking drivers. So be cool, but don’t drink and drive. When you entertain this summer, here are some suggestions that will help make your parties safe as well as fun. Non-alcoholic drinks should be as inviting and accessible as alcoholic drinks. CAKE Oregon City was the nearest trading post in those early days and about twice a year the settlers would go there by team and wagon for their mail and supplies. It wasn’t until the 1870”s that Willamina had a general merchandise store and post office. THANK YOU PUCKER UP PORKY The Corner Store had a Kiss The Pig contest. All proceeds went to the 4th of July fireworks. This is how it worked....inside the Corner Store there were jars with the employees names on them. You droped your donations into the jar of the employee that you most wanted to kiss the pig (a real baby pig). The employee with the most money in their jar would win a date with the pig at 12 noon in the Corner Store parking lot for all the world to see. Leann Keyser was the excited winner! Some thought it was cruel, and that a blindfold should be used ....... for the pig!!!
