4 ♦WILLAMINA TIMES II ♦ Volume 1 Issue 1 JULY 1995 50 OH HOYE ! ORDIE NAMED GRAND MARSHAL WILLAMINA’S INDEPENDENCE DAY According to Webster’s Dic tionary the word vision means (2): unusual discernment or foresight. Then again, I am reminded that one man’s vision is another man’s hallucination. Time will tell which one this will turn out to be. The first Willamina Times newspaper was printed August 24, 1909 by J.A. Hart. It went out of business in the early 70’s, and since then has been filed away in the annals of history................ Until now! The Willamina Times II (second generation) has been dusted off and brought back to life by a group of volunteers. It is a non-profit, monthly (monthly for now) paper dedicated to serving our communities. None of us are journalists (you can probably tell that already), but we are people who love our community, faults and all. Our greatest asset are the people who live here. We are very fortunate to have a town that not only works well together, but also gets along together. Some people feel that the good things we are accomplishing as a community are not given enough attention. . We will do ‘ our best to correct that, and keep“ you informed on what’s going oh I in our communities and in ours state. No matter what you’ve heard or read..... we do have alot to be proud of. o rdie Hoye has been chosen as Grand Vision? Hallucination? Only time will tell............ W.H.S. Ordie and his wife Marjorie Rose came to Willamina in 1967. A 26 year veteran of the teaching profession, Ordie had been hired by the Willamina School District to teach boys’ P.E. in the high school and to coach. He held these po sitions for 3 years before giving them up due to a hearing loss. From 1970 to 1980 Ordie worked at the plywood plant in Willamina. When the mill closed on February 8, 1980 (Ordie’s 62nd birth day), he decided to retire. In the spring of 1980 he began his career as a volunteer when he became the Assistant Track Coach at the high school. He also served 3 years as Assistant Wrestling Coach. He worked on the baseball field, poured concrete for the run ways of the new track, and worked on the mid dle school softball field creating a dirt infield. He also built a storage shed for track equipment and still maintains the field for track. Somehow he finds time to run the time clock for the high school girls’ basketball team and also for the middle schools boys’ and girls’ basketball team. Ordie was the ultimate volunteer at the Willamina United Methodist Church where he did nearly all of the maintenance work from the time of his arrival until shortly before the church closed. He was “Chief Bottle-Washer” at the Kiwanis lunch meetings for 10 of the fourteen years that his wife Marj was “Chief Cook and Organizer.” In 1991 the West Valley Chamber of Commerce chose Ordie as the recipient of their First Citizen Award for his dedication to his community. In February of this year Ordie was name Citizen-of-the-Month by the Willamina City Council for his continuing labors of love. A NEW BEGINNING(S) COMES TO WILLAMINA “Public response has been overwhelming”, reports Teddi Millsap, of her new Willamina business, NEW BEGINNINGS. The full service salon, located at 180 N.E. Main, next to the post office, offers a complete range of hair and nail care from licensed and experienced professionals. Teddi has been a hair stylist for 22 years, with experience both in New York and managing chain outlets in Portland and Aloha. She owned a shop in Newberg for 5 years, moving to Sheridan three and a half years ago, and recently she moved to Willamina when she needed more space. She has big plans, and has hired one operator, with another hopefully coming on board next week. With 1850 sq. ft., she has lots of room for expansion. When asked about her vision for her salon, she replied she would like “a warm loving place where people can come and be spoiled.” She hires only professionals who are caring, compassionate, and know how to make people comfortable. She envisions providing a public service to our community, and may soon be able to provide out call services to the home bound and elderly, on a personal referral basis. Teddi and her husband Michael, have three children; Michael,24; Timothy, 18; and Elizabeth 15. They reside here in Willamina, and feel that they are “coming into a town that is on the upswing.” She feels very welcomed by the community, from receiving flowers form the Willamina Business Group, to all the folks “who have poked their heads in the door to say hello and that they are glad to have us in town.” “I’m very glad to be here and appreciate all the support and enthusiasm”, reports Teddi, adding that she hopes to bring an exceptional level of service to the community. If you haven’t already met Teddi and her staff, stop in soon and say hello. After meeting her, you will agree, she is an asset to willamina!
