14 Travel & Entertainment Sat Sept 2 – Sun Sept 3, 2023 Elkton Rendezvous / Fort Umpqua Days ELKTON, OREGON - The community of Elkton is making plans for their annual celebration of local history held on September 2nd & 3rd of Labor Day Weekend. Historic reenactors will set up camp on the grounds of Fort Umpqua, a life-size replica of a Hudson’s Bay trading fort, to show what life was like in the Umpqua River Valley in the mid-1800’s. Guests can visit with blacksmiths and trappers, press their own cider, enjoy kids’ activities and visit live animal exhibits. On Saturday, educators from the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians’ Education Program will be on site to teach people about Native American culture. Enjoy Elkton’s hometown parade and famous pie auction on Saturday, along with a performance by the Sunny Sky Boys from 11am-1pm. A wide range of other activities including live music, artisan booths, tours of ECEC’s butterfly pavilion and an opportunity to “Adopt-A-Butterfly” continue all weekend. Culinary highlights include a Lions’ Club pancake breakfast, BBQ fundraiser and ECEC’s student-run Outpost Cafe. Most activities run from 10am-4pm. Each day wraps up with Elkton’s live action musical pageant, Echoes of the Umpqua, at 5pm. About ECEC The Elkton Community Education Center (ECEC) organizes cultural and educational events in North Douglas County, and serves as a job training site for local high school students. The nonprofit manages 44-acres of land that are open to the public including a native plant park, butterfly pavilion and historic Fort Umpqua. Come hear the riveting life story of Bob Crites as he tells about grow- ing up during the ‘40s-’50s in Eugene, Drain, and Creswell, Oregon, his work with the Peace Corps in Brazil and Guatemala during military and political upheaval, and later founding an inter- national nonprofit organization and its partnership with Dr. Jane Goodall. Larry was born on June 18, 1948 in Nebraska. He moved to Oregon in the early 70s by way of LA. “Buck” was a sign painter who made Junction City his home and over the many years He painted signs in Western Oregon He endeared himself to his local and extended community. A prolific sign painter and artist Larry’s work ethic trumpeted his expertise across the State of Oregon. Larry Buckles was a well known Motorcycle enthusiast and collector. Known for his work on Indian and Harley-Davidson Motorcycles, Larry made friends and acquaintances as far as Australia and Germany. Buck was a long time member of the Free Souls Motorcy- cle Club, Eugene Chapter. Larry passed away peacefully on May 16, 2023. Larry touched many lives and will be missed. He is survived by his wfe Chris and Daughter Tiana.
