For one thing he was busy, running between stock brokers’ of fices and the bank — at one tune with a quarter of a m illion dollars’ worth of negotiable bonds under his jacket. Berger was 19 at the time Despite the severity of the depres sion, he managed to rem ain employed in the banking industry Berger retired in 1975 after 17 years as executive vice president and chief executive officer at the Clackamas County Bank He serv ed on the board of directors until 1980 In 1981, he was honored by the Oregon Bankers Association for 50 years of service to the industry. Retirement hasn't slowed the pace of his life, however Berger is treasurer for Mount Htxxl Hospice, a care organization for people with term inal illnesses. He is chairm an of the advisory committee at the Sandy Senior Center. The board makes recom mendations on the activities to be offered by the senior center And, in January, Berger w ill be honored for his 40 years of service to the Kiwanis Club He also is serving on a citizens task force studying issues for the Sandy City Council. The task force is weighing the benefits of a com munity center against other com munity needs. Berger's wife of 41 years, Sara, is equally active. She is involved in the Business and Professional Women’s Club and works as a s u b s titu te te a ch e r in Sandy, Estacada and Boring Sara said she enjoys teaching "I like to be w ith young people," she said. The Bergers host a party for foreign exchange students at their home each year Their house, which offers a view of the bend in the Sandy River, is at what was once the site of the early pioneer picnics." Of all the activities the Bergers have been involved in, they seem to take special pride in the develop ment of the Sandy Industrial Park A group of investors pooled their money to develop the park on a piece of tim berland w ith only modest value The property had a narrow road Sara and Howard Berger live a fast-paced life despite the fact that Howard has been retired for 12 years. on it that was shaded by the tall trees, making it a "lo ve r's lane," Sara said As they sold property, the money was plowed hack into the park Berger is proud of the contribution they made to the economic health of Sandy " A ll those businesses add to the payroll and add to the tax ro lls ," he said. The goal was to bring jobs to San dy, not to turn a profit "We told them (the investorsi we might not make a dune," Berger said But, when the corporation was dissolved, investors received a return of about three times on their original investment. Berger had the same kind of suc cess at the Clackamas County Bank When he started, the bank had deposits of »4 m illion, an amount that quadrupled by the tim e he retired Berger form er president of the Oregon Independent Bankers Association and the Sandy Area also raise money and volunteer tim e to keep programs going. " I t's not something someone eLse dished out for us," Berger said " I t ’s something we're doing for ourselves." The Bergers have two children and a granddaughter. Cham ber of C om m erce’s 1971 Citizen of the Year is s till called upon to get results. But, as his in volvement at the senior center shows, he's not complaining A lthough the senior center receives funds from the city and the federal government, its members Stira had to w alk to dance Howard Berger attended Sandy High School for three years before his parents moved to Portland where he graduated from Franklin High School. Sara Sewell grew up in M urry C ross, a r u r a l cro s s ro a d s in Alabama Berger was stationed at Camp Stbert near Gadson. Ala., during World War 11 He saw Sara at a soft- ball game between the officers and the enlisted men " I was pitching for the enlisted men; she had a date with an o ffic e r," he joked Ixiter, they began dating. After they got m arried, Sara moved to Oregon as Howard returned to his job at the Bank of California in Portland Sara said she didn't mind the move, saying it seemed like an adventure and she liked to travel. Although Sara doesn’t have a Southern accent, Howard said he had to get used to her Southern expres sions. One of them involved the use of the word "c a rry ” for "take. When people asked Berger if he "ca rried Sara to the dance," he would reply, "No. I made her w alk." Senior Center news Ethel Jones and Dale McKenney, residents of Orchard Crest Care Center since 1972, have been friends for over twenty years. Along with other residents, they enjoy many versatile activities, such as outings, special events, music, programs, games, crafts, movies, picnics, Tram rides, the circus, the Zoo and parties for special occasions. The information gained from these forums w ill be us ed in a community profile report to be released by United Way and made available to forum participants.
