In fa ct, Swarts had even placed a frie n d ly bet th a t the race w ould not net over $1,000, since last ye a r's total had been less than $500 "T h a t was one bet I was delighted to lose,” he said "E ve ryo n e was ve ry positive about the e xperience," Swarts said S w a rts sa id the B rig h tw o o d Tavern plans to host the races again next year. "W e ’d like to see it be a township event, instead of som ething lim ite d to the ta v e rn ." O'Cain d id a d m it, though, that the event was, " a bit sluggish at tim e s.” One high point of the evening was the coronation of the new Slug Queen, la u re n McCay. la s t year's Slug Queen, K aren Goen, passed the cape and crow n on to McCay. The e xcitem ent of the event d im m ed to a reverent hush. " I t ’s a real honor to be a damned Slug Queen,” she managed to choke out, and c a ll ed fo r the races to resume. In honor of the soft and s lim y athletes, B rightw ood T avern had changed the title s on its menu. Slug Sausage and Slug B urgers were be ing ordered. " B rin g me another Slug C o o le r!” someone shouted to an overw helm ed w aitress. She was already c a rry in g a slug of beer to someone else. The races were an opp o rtu n ity fo r the slugs to present th e ir per sonalities, a v irtu e some fin d keen ly m issing in the creatures.
