The European Space Agency, ESA, has recently emerged as a force in the commerciali zation o f space. ESA was established in 1975 by I I countries — Britain, France, Germany, Belgium. Denmark, Ireland, Italy, the N e the rla n ds, S pain, Sweden and Switzerland. It's biggest success to date is the Ariane rocket, which now has a backlog o f 28 satellites to launch. Ariane is very similar to the U.S.’s space shuttle but is expected to cost less per launch than the shuttle. In July, ESA plans to launch a scientific probe that w ill rendezvous with Halley s comet, one o f the many T ■____ _____ . . . . Now we are very much an equal partner. In some fields we are a leader.” ESA projects that has American scientists watching enviously.
