U n io n are no lo n g e r the
undisputed superpowers in the
conquest o f space. The European
Space Agency, ESA, has recently
emerged as a force in the commerciali
zation o f space.
ESA was established in 1975 by I I
countries — Britain, France, Germany,
Belgium. Denmark, Ireland, Italy, the
N e the rla n ds, S pain, Sweden and
Switzerland. It's biggest success to date
is the Ariane rocket, which now has a
backlog o f 28 satellites to launch.
Ariane is very similar to the U.S.’s
space shuttle but is expected to cost less
per launch than the shuttle.
In July, ESA plans to launch a
scientific probe that w ill rendezvous
with Halley s comet, one o f the many

ESA also plans to launch a solar probe
and a superaccurate star locator.
ESA Director George Van Reeth has
been quoted as saying, “ We started out
as the younger brother. Now we are
very much an equal partner. In some
fields we are a leader.”
ESA projects that has American
scientists watching enviously.
ESA has already sent into space a
gamma ray observatory, an ultraviolet
observatory and an x-ray observatory.

organization w ill distribute half o f the
food and medical supplies ir. Sudan
