Reick, Romey bound for state by SCOTT NEW TON For SUHS senior Brian Reick, qualifying for the sta te m eet F rid a y at C la c k a m a s C o m m u n ity College was the realization of a long-term goal. Reick was sixth at the d is tr ic t cross c o u n try m e e t, r u n n in g th e 5000-meter course in 16:29, a personal record by about 17 seconds Reick has a base that’s almost beyond belief. As of Tuesday, he’d logged 534 consecutive days of getting in a run. In 1981 he ran 2,205 miles, and he’s already run 2,300 this year. By Dec. 31 he figures he’ll have run 2,700 miles “ I ’m used to it. I t ’s part of my day,” Reick said. That 4,000-plus mileage also figured into his finish at the district meet “ I was thinking about it before the race, almost 4,000 miles of training just to make it to state,” he said. "T h a t’s all I ever dreamed of, making it to state. Now that I have, I guess it was all worth it." The 3.1-mile race didn’t start well for Reick. He said his legs were numb. At the one-mile m ark he was 15 seconds behind the leaders He had planned to be with them. At two and one-half miles he was in 13th place Only the top six qualify for state Reick said, “ I knew I had to do something there, so I took o ff.” R eick, who has p a r ticipated in track since his freshman year and cross c o u n tr y sin c e his sophomore year, would like to p articip ate in cross country on the college level next year, though he is undecided about which col lege or what to major in A n in e -m in u te 3000 m eters, o r the school record, is a goal for the spr ing As for a goal at the state cross country meet in E u g en e th is w eekend, Reick said, " I don't know what's left. I was never sure I could make it to state ” With a grin, he added, " I'd like to beat Sam once.” Sam, of course, is Sam Romey He won his second district cross country title Friday, finally winning a good battle with Centennial sophomore Rob Collins Romey ran the course in 15:53 4, with Collins three tenths of a second behind him About the race, Romey said, " I enjoyed it." About the state meet, he said, " I'm still trying for the top 10. I think that’s a realistic goal It's going to be a high one, but it's realistic .” Romey, a junior, finished 20th at the state meet last year Having been before will be an advantage Satur day. he feels He said. ‘ ‘ A ny o th e r ra c e e x perience doesn't mean that much, but down at state i t ’s a whole 'nother world.” Both runners feel that go ing out with the leaders is a key to doing well. If things went well for Reick and Romey Friday, o th e r P io n e e r ru n ners didn’t fare as well. Coach Scott McMullen has been pleased with senior Donna Nelson all year, but Friday she finished eighth, in 11:16.4 ( 3000 meters). “ All that hard work and she would have to get sick before district,” he said. Nelson had the flu the day of the race. Sharon Jensen , who finished 16th at state last year, was 10th in the District 3 meet with a time of 11:22.2. McMullen had envision ed better finishes from both the girls and boys teams, figuring both had a chance to win the M t Hood Con ference crown, even if they weren't dual-meet champs A second-place team finish would have been good for a trip to state. Instead, Gresham, with 82 points, took the district title. Reynolds had 87, for second. Centennial was third with 95 and Sandy fourth with 97. For the girls, Centennial was handily first with 33 points David Douglas had 68 and Sandy was third with 85. Cindy Pokorny of Centen nial won the girls race with a 10:50.2. SERVICE WE GIVE!
