Andy Norman and Blaine Caudle contributed third- and fourth-place finishes, r e s p e c t iv e ly , to c o n tributed to a team state championship A second 7 and under team took second for the Hawks, with Ben M atz. An dy Schneider and Travis Romey finishing fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively. Shawna Patterson, "one of our strongest runners," was in trouble early with a hip pointer, but teammates G alvin, Jordan and H a r rison placed fifth, sixth and seventh out of a pack of SO runners to compensate K im Y a n k a u s k a s (th e youngest m ember of the top five) was "absolutely wonderful, passing more people than I could count as she took 14th " Patterson ended up in 28th place, far below her norm, and Angel Bean was 45th “I was a marvelous team win as we were 22 points better than second- place Roseburg, even with all our problem s," said Beymer Angela Benedetti turned in on of her "most brilliant runs with a kick that c a r ried her just short of first place as she led the team to second in torrid competi tion in the 13-14 girls divi sion B e n e d e tti ra n th e 400(cmeter course in 16 05 Shaune Gilchrist and Cin dy Roth "w ere great" in fourth and fifth , w hile Robin E rm a tin g e r was 18th. and Corky Fones 26th “ It's great to think that four out of the five w ill come back in the same age group again next year,” Beym er said Audrey Krause led the 10 and under girls to a third- place finish, taking seventh “with another fine run ” Beym er said, “ I was again impressed by first- year runner Ruth Romey,” who finished ninth Roaey Pankey was 11th, and last y e a r's state cham pion, Michele Gatchell, running with a cast on one arm , could only manage 12th Halo Bean rounded out the top five in 21st, while Trish Waibel was 22nd and Cody Proctor 26th The 11-12 boys were out of the trophy range, in fo u rth place B ran do n Shore was 20th, Tom Romey 22nd, L a rry Little 26th, James Scott 29th and Jason King 30th M art9 Romey picked up a medal in the 10 and under boys competition with a lOth-place finish Ron Cau dle was 13th Adam Erm atinger was fourth in the 15-16 boys divi sion. W ith seven te a m s entered, the Hawks took two firsts, three seconds, one third and one fourth “ I don’t think that was a bad day," Beymer said “ The kids won 19 m edals.” Some members w ill com p e te in C a n a d a th is weekend. The weekend after next they’ll compete in the Regional Junior O ly m p ic s a t E p h r a ta . Wash The Grizzlies have a lot of ex-Oregon City players on the rooter, including starting quarterback Geoff Steenson Said Kim Johns, Oregon City coach, " I t ’s impossi ble for them ( the Grizzlies) to get fired up enough to beat us They keep talking, talking and talking, but, do you know what? They’re all talk and no action." Steenson, according to an Oregon City press release, said, "H a lf the players on our team played last year for the Steelheads, and we didn’t like F ’ m Johns We still don't ."
