Oral Hull construction begins by DAN DILLON When Oral and Albert Hull donated 22 acres near Sandy for use by the blind some 2« years ago, there was little at the site beyond an old farmhouse N e x t s p rin g when a new 5.000-square-foot dorm itory is completed, members of the Oral Hull Foundation for the Blind ex pect to have something very special. “ It will be one of the besi recrea tional centers in the United States for the blind.’’ said Marie Webb “ We expect people to come from far and wide ’’ C u rren tly the o rigin al f a r mhouse, which has been remodel ed, is used as housing for blind visitors to the park Eventually, it will be the home of an assistant caretaker The new dormitory—named for Evangeline Philbin, an early benefactor of the foundation—will provide housing for 4« guests and include a 784-square-foot recrea tion room to complement the other atractions already offered at Oral Hull Park The Rainbow Lodge, dedicated in 1975 by then Gov. Bob Straub, houses a large dining area, a kit chen and library with books printed in B raille. A lounge features a large stone fireplace, an organ and a piano A picnic shelter was dedicated in 1981 A shelter near the garden for the blind can handle meetings and get-togethers for groups of 50 peo pie The park is being developed to offer recreational opportunities for blind persons of all ages I^ast week, i»._ rnbers of the foun dation's original board of trustees, the foundation's first and current president, and friends of the foun dation gathered to bury a metal time capsule, donated by Baert's Metal Products of .Sandy.
