But shipments to the South increased fholo by Dan Dillon at Ruben Lane and directional signs in the park itself, In addition, each building will have an identification on its side. Chamber warned to watch land Dan B ic k m o re of the W estern E n v iro n m e n ta l Trade Association (W ETA) last Tuesday challenged m em bers of the Sandy Chamber of Commerce to be certain there is an adequate supply of industrial land WETA — a coalition of labor and business — formed 10 years ago The group works to insure that the economic voice is heard when environmental deci sions are made. It has studied the way in which Oregon’s economic future has been addressed in the state's land use planning process. C u r r e n t ly , o f th e 19 statewide land use planning goals, only Goal 9 specifical ly focuses on the state's need for economic development, according to Bickmore. One concern of WETA is that suf ficient and usable land is not being set aside for economic development in the com prehensive plans of Oregon’s cities and counties S p e c if ic a lly , W E T A 's study focused on Oregon’s future supply of industrial land Its a v a ila b ility impacts a com m unity's job supply, personal incomes and tax base. The m a n u fa ctu rin g jobs created by industry comprise nearly 20 percent of all jobs, and produce 28 percent of all wages and s a la r ie s , a c c o rd in g to Bickmore The wages and salaries Western lumber stays home The West was the destina tio n of 67.8 percent of western lumber shipments during the first half of 1981, according to a wood pro ducts industry report. S p e c ific a lly , shipm ents from the West to the West climbed from 1980's 65 9 per cent. The South increased from 13.5 to 14.2 percent, the North Central region drop ped from 15.7 to 13 8 percent, and the Northeast fell from 4.9 to 4 2 percent. “ The reason for much of the western lumber staying West is the com paratively greater demand in the pro ducers' own backyard," ac cording to Fred Reseburg, director of economics for the W estern Wood P ro d u cts Association. “P ro h ib itiv e transporta tion costs to distant regional markets and s tiff com peti tion from Canada and the southern U S. producing region also play a significant role in the s h ift,” he said. In 1976, the West was the destination for 54 4 percent of western lumber, the South 13.8 percent, North Central 25.3 percent and the Nor theast 6 5 percent. are recycled back into the com m unity, to create and support more jobs, he said The program presented to the Sandy Chamber sum m a riz e d the re s u lts of W ETA’s study. These in itia l results are not encouraging development However, the Port of Hood R iver surveyed the 1,200 acres and concluded that — except for 3.7 acres at the P ort's industrial park — only 10 acres met specific crite ria necessary fo r in d u s tria l development WETA has found that in various counties, the future supply of industrial land is inadequate. For example, in Hood River County, the cur rent d ra ft comprehensive plans designate more than 1,200 acres as potentially u s a b le fo r in d u s t r ia l The city of Sandy is cu r rently conducting a survey of potential industrial sites th ro u g h its E c o n o m ic Development Commission and has designated approx im ately 130 acres for in dustrial development in its comprehensive plan.
