Western lumber stays home
The West was the destina

western lumber shipments
during the first half of 1981,
according to a wood pro

S p e c ific a lly , shipm ents

climbed from 1980's 65 9 per
cent. The South increased
from 13.5 to 14.2 percent, the
North Central region drop
ped from 15.7 to 13 8 percent,
and the Northeast fell from
4.9 to 4 2 percent.
“ The reason for much of
the western lumber staying
West is the com paratively
greater demand in the pro
ducers' own backyard," ac
cording to Fred Reseburg,
director of economics for the
W estern Wood P ro d u cts

“P ro h ib itiv e transporta

markets and s tiff com peti

southern U S. producing
region also play a significant
role in the s h ift,” he said.
In 1976, the West was the
destination for 54 4 percent
of western lumber, the South
13.8 percent, North Central
25.3 percent and the Nor
