Hep Jim Weaver, D-Ore . last week sent telegrams to Secretary of the Interior James Watt and Secretary of Agriculture John Block urg ing them to immediately cancel all aerial herbicide spray programs on federal forest lands and substitute manual brush control "Oregon urgently needs jobs ” W MVtt l a i d I II h i s telegrams "Our economic situation is desperate and many citizens are literally up in arms over planned spray actions "Testimony to my Forests Subcommittee Thursday in dicates we could not only create hundreds of new jobs with manual methods, but also in many cases do the job better and cheaper using people instea d of chemicals," Weaver said Watt oversees the Bureau of lAind Management and Brock oversees the U S Forest Service Weaver held a hearing Thursday in Eugene on his hill which would require the Forest Service and BI.M to choose vegetation manage merit methods that would “ y ie ld the m a x im u m number of jobs per dollar ex pended ’’ "Testimony at Thursday's hearing showed clearly that in many cases m anual methods are not only more effective they are also less expensive," Weaver said "And that's without even considering the money the government would save because of e lim in a te d unemployment and welfare payments to those who would be put back to w ork." The Sandy Community School w ill host a forum May 19, featuring two of the state’s leading experts on the effects of herbicide spraying and a respresen tative of the State Highway D epartm ent which does roadside spraying Dr Jim W itt, Oregon State I niversity biochemist and toxicologist, and Dr Sheldon Wagner, a toxicologist at Go<xi Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis, w ill discuss the potential medical problems which arise with continued spraying of toxic herbicides Wagner is attempting to establish a statewide pro gram for physicians to test blood levels for damaging amounts of herbicide in the bloodstream Joe Hay, of the State Highway Departm ent in Salem, will present a slide show on that agency's spray operation The program w ill be held from 7 to 9 p m Conference day set at SUHS The fourth in a series of academic conference days will be held next Monday, May 4, from 12 noon to 4:30 p ni and from 5 to H p m at Sandy Union High School The conference days are set aside for parents to visit with school staff about their c h ild 's p ro g re s s in classwork. and in meeting the school's scholastic, at tendance and conduct re quirements < ipportunities will t>e provided for visits with teachers, counselors, s u p p o rt s ta ff ministrators . • M IT t h is measure is ap proved, $ 1 9 7 ,7 1 6 .0 0 o r ta x e s le v ie d w i l l be t o t a l l y lo c a l ta x p a y e rs w ith o u t any p a r t i a l s t a t e paym ent.
