Jim Matthews Scholarship Project by- Elizabeth McLauchlan My name is Elizabeth McLauchlan and I am a senior at Butte Falls High School. I am currently working on a community service project for the Jim Matthews Mem. Scholarship. This project is an opportunity for me to give back to the community and I have chosen to implement the SMART program at Butte Falls Elementary School. SMART (Start Making A Reader Today) is a book and reading program for kindergarten through third grade children. Former Oregon govenor, Neil Goldschmidt, founded the program through the Oregon Children ’s Foun dation. Children involved in the pro gram read with a community volunteer twice a week. This program is designed to create enthusiastic readers who can read at or above grade level by the time they leave elementary school. I am working hard to get this program started for the coming school year. In order to reach this goal I will need assistance from members of the community. I am also greatly in need of a school coordinator to make sure the project runs smoothly. The role of coordinator is a paid position that would require a commitment of about 10 hours per week. Responsibilities include recruiting volunteers, sched uling reading sessions, training volunteers, preparing progress reports, and other related activities. In addition to the coordinatior position, there are several other opportunities for community members to be involved with the project. Volunteers are needed to make a commitment of one hour per week to read to two students for one half-hour at a time. Anyone who is interested in providing financial assistance or in volunteering for one of the above stated openings, please feel free to contact me at school (541) 865- 3563 or at home (541) 865-3678. I am excited about the opportunity to implement the SMART program at Butte Falls Elementary School and I am sure that you are too. This program will not only improve the children ’s reading skills, but will help bring our comm unity closer to our youth! $ B g h e b q D U , 0 2 a n tS D 2 G b ..
