WE LEARN TOGETHER
Late in the afternoon Juanita
Constante sat w ith her children
around her. They were quiet, listen­
ing. Juanita was reading a story in
English. As she read, her words
were careful and clear. It was hard
to realize that Juanita had never
been to classes to learn English.
"The children helped me learn a
new language," said Juanita.
My
oldest girls started.school ten years
ago.
1 knew then I had to learn
English to help them w ith their
school w ork."
When Carmen, the oldest child,
studied
her
lessons, .Juanita
listened. Soon the mother was able
to help each child.
"I want my children to have an
education. We have nine girls and
one boy. I know it is just as impor-

stante se sentó rodeada por sus
hijos. Estaban quietos, escuchán­
dola. Al leer, sus palabras salían
con cuidado y con claridad.
Era
difícil darse cuenta de que Juanita
nunca había asistido a clases para
aprender inglés.
' Los niños me
ayudaron a aprender a la el nuevo
idioma," dijo Juanita.
Mis hijas

Cuando Carmen , la mayor,
estudiaba sus lecciones, Juanita la
escuchaba. Pronto la mamá podía'
ayudar a cada hijo.
"Quiero que mis hijos se
eduquen. Tenemos nueve hijas y
un hijo. Sé que es tan importante

tant for our girls to go to school as
our boy."
Girls who have been to school
are then able to educate their ch il-.
dren. Juanita is self educated. She
has given much to her children.
Patience, gentle care and love are
reflected in her fam ily.
"I want my children to find a
friend in me. When they need help
I want them to ask me, not some­
one else."
Juanita has found time to care
for her fam ily and take VML night
classes. For a month Juanita has
studied basic education. She plans
to attend day school for adults this
winter. "I have no fear of school. I
want to learn all that I can, to share
w ith my children."

education classes.

English, Basic Education, GED

propios hijos más tarde. Juanita se
educó por sí misma. Ella ha dado
mucho a sus hijos. Su paciencia,

familia.
"Quiero que mis hijos me con­
sideren una amiga. Cuando neces­
iten ayuda, quiero que me la pidan
a mí, no otro."
Juanita ha tenido tiempo para
cuidar a su familia y para asistir a
las clases de noche de VML. Por un
mes, Juanita ha estudiado educa­
ción básica.
Piensa asistir a la
escuela de día por adultos este
invierno.
"La escuela no me da
miedo.
Quiero aprender todo lo
posible para poder repartirlo con
mis hijos."
Juanita Constante es una de los
2,039 estudiantes quien ha asistido
a las clases de educación VML por
adultos. Se ofrecen cursos de inglés
hablado, educación básica, prepa­
ración GED, y soldadura. Comuni­
