New G.E.D. class begins in Sandy
The newly opened Opportunity
Center at Sandy- has been very
busy recently. Among the many ac­
tivities going on there is a newly
organized G.E.D. class.

Archie Gress, of the VML Adult
Education Department, and Ken
Killary,'the Sandy supervisor, con­
ducted the first meeting.
There
were 18 farm workers at the first
meeting. They came to find out
about the -GJE-.D. test, and how
they could get their high school
certificate.
In the beginning there were
many questions. First Shirley Arch­
er, from Eagle Creek, asked, "What
is the G.E.D. test?"
Archie explained to her and the
rest of the class that the G.E.D. test
has five parts. When a person pass­
es alP five parts o f the test he is
given a high school certificate,
which w ill be the same as a high
school diploma for most purposes.

Then Mrs. Jo Philips, from
Sandy, asked,
"Do you have to
pass all five parts of the tests be­
fore you can get a certificate?
"Yes," answered Archie, "but
don't forget that you never have
to go back and retake any part
that you pass the first time.
For
example, if you pass three parts
of the test the first time you take
it, the second time all you have to
pass are the remaining two.
It's
just like bowling; if you knock
down one pin, you don't have to
go back and pick it up on the sec­
ond try, you just shoot for the re­
maining pins."
Finally, Don Smith, who lives in
the Paradise Acres Camp, near
Boring, asked, "When do we take
the test?" Archie explained that
each student can take the test
when he feels he is ready.
Now the class is 2 weeks old.
They meet every Monday and
Wednesday evening from 7:30
until 9-.30. There are approximate­
ly 20 students. We hope that soon
there w ill be 20 new G.E.D. certifi­
cates in the Sandy area.

El nuevo Centro de Oportunidad
en Sandy ha estado muy ocupado
recientamente.
Entre el
gran
número de actividades alíí hay una
clase de G.E.D. que está recién
organizada.
Archie Gress del Departamento
de Educación por los adultos de
VML y Ken Killary, el director de
Sandy, dieron la primera sesión.
Habían 18 trabajadores de agricul­
tura que asistieron a esa primera
sesión. Vinieron para saber cómo
es el examen de G.E.D. y cómo
pueden conseguir su certificado de
la escuela secundaria.
Al principio, , había muchas,
preguntas. La primera era la de
Shirléy Archer de Eagle Creek que
preguntó, "¿Qué es el examen de
G.E.D.?" Archie le explico a ella y
ios demás que el examen de G.E.D.
tiene cinco partes.
Cuando una
persona pasa todas las 5 partes del
examen recibirá un certificado de
la escuela secundaria. Este certifi­
cado servirá como un diploma de
la escuela secundaria en la mayoría
de ocasiones.
Entonces la Sra. Jo Philips de
Sandy preguntó, "Tiene que pas­
ar todas las partes antes de poder
recibir su certificado?"
"Sí," contestó Archie, "pero no
olvide Ud. que nunca se tiene que
tomar ninguna parte del examen
la segunda vez si lo ha pasado la
primera vez. Por ejemplo, si uno
pasa tres partes del examen la pri­
mera que lo toma, la segunda vez
tiene que tomar solamente las dos
partes que quedan. Es como el
juego bolos. Si cae un p in , no
tiene que levantarlo otra vez, sino
se tiene que derribar los que que­
dan."
Finalmente, Don Smith, que vive
en el campo de Paradise Acres,
cerca de Boring preguntó, "¿Cuan­
do tomarémos este examen?' A r­
chie le dijo que cada alumno lo
tomará cuando se sienta preparado.
Ahora, hace dos semanas desde
que empezó la clase. Se reúne cada
lunes y miércoles de las 7:30 a 9:30
de la noche. Hay unos 20 estud­
iantes. Esperamos que 20 certifi­
cados dé G.E.D. pronto sean dis­
tribuidos en el área de Sandy.
